Offer from my ISP - where's the catch?

I'm still with AOL, through inertia. The service is adequate as long as you never need tech support or customer service for anything. I've been paying £18 a month for a long time, initially for 512Kb, then for 1Mb and then for 2Mb.

Each time, AOL just increased the speed. I didn't have to do anything.

Now, they're bombarding me with junkmail (physical and email) offering me as fast as my line can handle for no increase in price. The stated speeds are variously 6, 8, 12 and 24 Mbps, so they obviously don't have any idea what the speed would really be. They even offered me free phone calls to all UK land lines all the time, 24/7, for nothing, as well as the faster broadband, and promised that I wouldn't need to sign a new contract unless I needed a new router.

So...where's the catch? I phoned the number and got someone in a call centre who had no idea what was going on and transferred me to someone else who also had no idea what was going on, but offered to transfer me to one of the current standard AOL packages instead, i.e. something completely different. So I gave up, which is the best thing to do when phoning AOL.

I don't care all that much, as I don't need faster broadband anyway, but I'm curious. There must be a really big catch somewhere, but I don't see it.

I was going to ask about the contract length as quite a few are now 18 months or longer. Maybe LLU services are just this cheap?

Yeah, that's the new "thing" with ISPs, doing fantastic deals on an 18 month contract, which are then beaten by another company 8-months later (if not exceeded).
