System is called NGP (Next Generation Portable), and is due to be released starting from the holiday season this year.

The full conference in HD video courtesy of Gamespot http://uk.gamespot.com/ngp/sports/hotshotsgolf/video/6287040?hd=1

EDIT - Apparently the name NGP is a 'codename' atm so it may or may not be the systems final name yet.

EDIT - Multiple SKU's are still yet to be confirmed, there are conflicting reports regarding that information atm.

EDIT 2 - Right, it's seems that there could still be multiple SKU's but they will all have 3G.

Some basic pics...

From what I can gather from most of the live blogs the device is about 85-90% comparable to the PS3 graphically which is very impressive imo.

Also as msmalls74 has reminded me Trophies are in.

System is also backwards compatible with PSP current software.

Looks like the NGP is going to have a new proprietary memory card for storage and also Jack Trenton from Sony apparently said that the NGP will not have any internal storage :-(, but you can save your games progress on the game carts themselves at least

According to a source on Eurogamer the NGP is rumoured to have a battery life of 4-5 hours, but take this with a pinch of salt atm.

Some interesting tit bits from live blogs..

"Kojima wants to create an experience where you can play something on the PS3, then put it on the NGP and take it with you and resume your experience."
"Dungeon Defenders was meant for the PS3 but was moved over to the portable. And nothing was reduced in the process. The team could make the move over in just one week of development time.
"They're using PS3 shaders, etc on the NGP"
"Call of Duty confirmed for the NGO."
"these are analogue sticks, not nubs like on the current PSP. They're raised from the surface."
"There will be physical media for games, a New Game Media, a flash memory-based card."
"The touchscreen on the back is the same size as the OLED screen, so the location of your finger is mapped directly to the game screen."

Not gonna be cheap. I cannot pay more for a handheld than a home console out of principle.

I hear this a lot but why?, advanced micro electronics are always expensive, that has always been the case, the 3DS as it stands @ £230 is already the same price as a PS3 and 360, look at price of smart phones purchased outside of a contract, the price of a mid range iTouch for example.

I assume there will be video of this up somewhere? I'll have to have a watch when I get home this afternoon.

I don't think there will be proper video uploaded anywhere, I think the only stream available was the one I was watching which was a very poor quality ustream that was mostly in Japanese from Kotako.

Now that looks gorgeous.

I think I might have to go Sony this time round, looks a helluva lot more impressive than the 3DS...

If they price this right Nintendo could finally have a fight on their hands for the portable market.

Obviously this isn't going to be released at the 3DS's price point but the fact the 3DS is already quite expensive (for a Nintendo handheld) due to the 3d screen tech it certainly gives Sony a bit of leeway, I'm hoping for £299 but I have a feeling it could hit for £349.

But what is important is how many games will be released for it.
Is it easy to program or as difficult as the PS3?
Backwards compatibility is nice, lets hope they make a CFW soon (for homebrew off course)

Well they are saying that it is very easy to port games from the PS3 to the system so I guess in theory it 'could' have as many games as the PS3 has, if it really is that easy to port them across then I imagine if the NGP takes of it will make sense for publishers to sanction ports of their new games for extra revenue without a lot of outlay.

I don't think UMD will work, it doesn't even work on the PSP GO.

I think it means that if you downloaded a game off the PSN it will also work on the NGP if downloaded onto a memory stick.[/url]

yeah UMD is out I'm afraid, just like with the PSP Go, my guess is if you have purchased any PSP games digitally then you should be able to login with your PSN acc and re-download them again onto the NGP from the store.

Biggest deal for me, (apart from a new Hot Shots :D), is the dual analogue sticks, that is a massive deal and a real game changer for 'core games', it essentially makes this the only portable games system that you can play FPS games on properly, that alone is a big plus, I know people tire sometimes of the fps genre but lets face it, it's a very popular genre and it isn't going anywhere soon, also dual sticks will help a hell of a lot for third person games too, or even 3D game like Katamari.

For those of you that may of skipped over the GI hands on,
Here's a word I promised myself I would never use to describe an electronic device: sexy. Nevertheless, the second I had the NGP in my hands, this is the first adjective that flashed across my mind. It's skinny, sleek, and feels great. I wasn't able to get a hard number for the weight of the device, but it was definitely lighter than my first-gen PSP, much more in line with the feathery feel of the PSPgo. I guess not having a bulky UMD drive will do that.

Since the controls are laid out almost exactly like a PS3 controller, I was able to jump into Uncharted with almost no learning curve, using the controls just as I would on the console. (NOTE: stay tuned for further impressions of Uncharted on the NGP.) One kind of surprising but important difference is the analog sticks. Rather than being pulled over directly from the PS3 controller, the analog sticks on the NGP have been redesigned and feel a little more like the analog sticks on an Xbox 360 pad -- concave rather than rounded. I only spent a short amount of time with the device, but I think there's a good chance that the analog sticks on this could feel better than the analogue sticks on the regular PlayStation 3 controller.

Also some better game shots,

I only just noticed you made an earlier thread on this as well msmalls :(, sorry dude, I can get carried away sometimes, didn't mean to step on your toes, didn't expect anyone else to be posting a thread on this so early, I thought I was the only crazy one on here that stayed up so late for these events.

This is interesting, multiple SKU's?

"The first thing to clarify, which I'm not sure the presentation did a perfect job of doing today, is that all of the devices will have Wi-Fi capability; a separate SKU will have 3G,"

So it looks like we're having the option of a cheaper non-3g model.

EDIT - There are conflicting reports regarding this story now from a few sites so don't take this as gospel yet sorry.

EDIT 2 - Right, it's seems that there could still be multiple SKU's but they will all have 3G.
