Hi,

Office 2007's "Ribbon" UI thingy is ****. I'd like to get the classic menu toolbar back. There's a number of pay-for apps out there, but I don't want to pay. Any freebies or DIY alteratives?

TYVM :)

The Ribbon interface is 100x better than the old one.
It is the best thing MS have done to Office for a long time.

My advice is the same, if it's friends, family, strangers, people at work - take the time to learn the Ribbon.
The interface is going nowhere and once you have taken the time to learn it (give yourself an hour) you'll see just how bad the old interface was.

Answer to actual question - No, not a free way of doing it.

The ribbon 'exposes' a lot of features that where previously tucked away somewhere in the menu's.

I think the only advantage of the 'classic' look, is that the shortcut keys were always displayed in the menus. They're pretty essential for a power user. They're still there with the ribbon but you have to hover over the item and wait for the tooltip to pop up, so you're less likely to pick them up unless you're looking for them.

ugh, i dont want to start flaming, but the old interface makes my eyes bleed. The new one i can actually see what the controls do and......actually see the controls.

It's so funny when people deem something to be crap just because it's not what they are used to. That's the single reason people don't like it.

Jeez, dont understand why people come into a thread and are less than helpful - OP wanted something, if you cannot provide, whats the point of posting - he has his own reasons for wanting the old style back!

Thats true. I was exactly the same when I first started using it but once you get used to it it's so much better.

Simple thing about it is people just don't like change!

It took me a few weeks to get used to the new interface but now I really like it. I appreciate that its large but its a lot easier to use in the long run.
