Ok im setting up a friends business with a poweredge server and 6 core duo workstations. Now he wants office 2007 small business on each machine.

This one here:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SW-057-MS&groupid=33&catid=124&subcat=

Now would i be right in saying i will need to buy 6 copies of this, one for each workstation? Or does the small business edition allow me to license more than one machine?.....

If not that would mean a cost of £1868.16!!!! which would be a massive chunk of the budget just for office.....

Thanks for any advice

Hmm interesting, thanks for the link m8 :)
Seems like its not as simple as just getting an "off the shelf" price for 6 copies....

For six PC's it is more or less a matter of getting six copies off the shelf.
First question would be desktop/laptop useage.

If out of those six machines there is one laptop and it belongs to the same user (and will be used by the same person as one of the desktops) then there is a license you can scrap.

Other than that - six licenses means you'll need six copies.
The Student/Home edition specifically says not for commercial use in the license.
You won't see much if any kind of discount from buying licenses for so few machines.
We hardly see any discount for purchases of around 30-40 at a time.

If OEM copies of Office are available that might be an option - cheaper initial layout, but may cost you more in the future as and when you replace machines.
Licenses with Software Assurance is the most expensive route, however get 3yrs SA and you'll get Office 2007 now and all new versions of Office for the next 3yrs free of charge.
You'll also get the "Home Use Program" which will allow you to buy a special copy of Office 2007 for use at home for each license you own (£18 charge, but means each of the workers can have full Office at home for this charge).

Office isn't cheap, well certainly not right at the beginning when you are first rolling it out.
However you need to remember that most of MS's revenue comes from Server OS's, business solutions and Office.

i know the small office / student allows upto 3 PCs

This is not true for small business editions and like stoofa said, you can't use home software ina buiness environment.

You may only use seondry use rights if the software is bought under a VLA and has software assurance (and have bought the rights) plus this can only be used at home and not in the office.
