please can someone explain the OEM NO CD just licence thing with office 2007 and how it works what good is a licence without an install disc???

You can download a trial of the corresponding office package frpm Microsoft and then activate it with the license you purchased before expiry of the trial!

I really do have to question the legality of this - after all, Microsoft are quite free to remove the trial download at any time, leaving you with no legal way to get hold of the software!

I believe the office trials are designed with this in mind; perfectly legal and activated with no issues.
I am currently away from home and have purchased Office 2007 Home & Student retail which is sat at home.
When you download the file from microsoft, they actually advise that you install the version that corresponds to any retail license that you may have puchased so as to avoid having to do a clean install.
I ran the trial for a few days, then simply entered my retail key(which i had e-mailed to me) and used the "transform" function built into the trial.

I totally agree with your point about the download link being removed but this isn't an issue for me as i have the media sat at home; it has simply enabled me to have it now rather than waiting untill i return home.

so can you download the trial package - effictively a full working version that locks out after a certain time?

then can u not back this setup file to a disc?

yes

just backup this setup file to disc, that way should you need to re-install in 3 years time or whatever, just run the setup, and then use your retail key to transform it.

you say 'retail' key by this do u mean the OEM licence key also?

so with the retail office 2007 you are actually buying the media and box, OEM is jst the licence

As I understand it, Retail is box, CD and key. OEM is CD and key (comes in a plastic packet rather than the box), and then you have medialess versions, which just have the license key.

It's more than that though, they are different licences and therefore have different restrictions, also, there is a difference in support.

burnsey - there are only 2 versions for the end user

Retail box
OEM MLK

the OPK is meant for resellers/vendors only.

therefore how can any end user buy the OEM MLK and use it legally unless the Office image is pre-installed on the PC at time of purchase?

i see OCUK selling the MLK, how is the user meant to actually use this without the image pre-installed, or by having access to an OPK?

The License OEM Only/NO CD product from OcUK is still out of stock and now there appears to a full OEM version which is cheaper, very confusing. Check with OcUK support to see whether this contains the CD, if it does your problems are solved.

no, there is a Home and Student edition, which isnt technically OEM. its a "retail" bundle and thus includes media and key.

other places have the OEM 2007 MLK for sale.

question still stands, hw can you use this?

There are more then two versions :

There is the Retail FPP, Upgrade, OEM and OEM MLK. Both versions of OEM are not meant for the public, but for a system builder, who can usually get media for a MLK package. I think you can unlock a trial edition with a MLK.

No you cant use Trail version to unlock with OEM MLK - it for Pre-installation PC that come with 90-days licence Office 2007 you buy with PC package - Ive asked MS support and they said it wont work -- trail version is 60 days and if you happy with it then buy online to get full version with product code keys - it wont work if you unlock from Trial version.

As i understand it, (i may not be completely right) is that retail is just that, With media and a licence that will only work with other retail versions.

And if you buy an OEM copy of office, you just get sent a dvd case with the liscence in it (the MLK)
Also what you need to get is the OPK (office preinstall kit) which contains all the installers for office that you need. - Im finding this the hard part, actually legally getting the media so i can use the licence i bought.

Hard? It's taken me 30 seconds to find a place for the OEM Master kit, about £10 inc postage.
