Afternoon all,

I recently purchased an older 1.83ghz macbook for the missus and I've managed to get hold of Office 2008 for Mac (2 copies) student edition - which is a new initiative that MS are running until april 31st. I'm not sure if it breaks forum rules, so i'll post the MS link and if its construed as breaking the rules, mods feel free to delete.

My question is, I've got 4gb RAM in my macbook, but the gf only has 512mb.. I know memory is dead cheap at the mo and it would be worthwhile upgrading her - but as she's a tax dodger she's skint!

But i do know that Neo Office is giving her all sorts of display problems, so I'm going to install office 2008. Will I see any issues with the amount of ram she has?

Cheers in advance,

Tom

I'm not sure if Office is a RAM hog or not, but 512mb is a bit on the skimpy side for OSX anyway. However, virtual RAM is there for a reason, and while it might be a little slow to load, once it's open it should run fine.

I'm speaking from general experience, I don't have Office 2008. Plus I'm sure you could treat the girl to some RAM. Nothing says "I love you" like a nice random access memory module.

Slightly off topic but you say you bought two copies of Office 2008, in the past the student editions used to come with 3 licence keys so you could install it legit on multiple machines, have they changed this now?

Just curious as I was going to order it in a couple of weeks and was hoping to be able to install it on my MBP, sisters MB and my old G4 :)

Yeah that's right, it's still licensed for up to 3 Macs, providing they're in the same household :)

D'oh!

Ah well, lesson well and truly learnt there then!

I suppose I can reclaim my dignity by saying she doesnt live with me :D

I think maybe I'll go for 2gb.. less than a dvd box set now! :)

Thanx all,

Tom

Office 2008 runs like crap anyway regardless of how much RAM you have, so you shouldn't have any more issues than the majority of Office 2008 users.
