Hi guys

A quick question I was hoping somebody maybe able to answer for me.

If I start Word or Excel on my Mac they automatically start with a blank document. Fair enough. Do you know a way of making them start without starting a new document? I.e. program running, but no document open?

Thanks

Mac

I'd look into changing your user name to something other than your email address or expect truck loads of spam.

Kinda trollish thing to say.

His question is legitimate enough, he wants the applications loaded in the dock without actually opening a document.

Sorry, not trying to troll, just trying to see why you want office/excel open but with no documents to interact with. I can't think of a use. Maybe it is just me....

Hell, I am going to be accussed of trolling again when I really have no axe to grind *but* your experience of Excel does not match mine. I am no MS fan, but I think it is the best office suite on the mac. If i want a spreadsheet there is no option but Excel. I find it very reliable, I hate the new ribbon interface, but i can use it !!

I report that it doesn't crash here, but the interface is messed up.

Working on a PC running Office 2007, then switching to the MBP running Office 2008 is downright confusing (but that's another thread).

Could try removing the blank document from ^^ and see what happens?

(Make a backup first though!)

Yup, you're right I should change my name ;)

As to why I want it - well I use word/excel day in day out (and I have no issue with it either, it just works) and I want it in my login items.

But then you end up with an open Word doc and an open Excel doc on your desktop.

Found that if I marked the startup as hidden then they didn't appear on my desktop. Worked a treat :)

(That's 'our' fault. Initially 2008 looked like 2007, with the ribbon etc. But Mac users in the alpha and beta complained that it was too different, and they missed the control box. So now we have a a screwy hybrid)

Looking forward to trying out Numbers '09 now it has been released. Were you involved with the beta program to be impressed with its stability?

Must be an issue with your specific setup then, no issues here.

Well as every single other application is rock solid, im not going to spend time buggering around to fix it.

Random crashes can't be related to anything else but the software, seeing as if every other app runs fine.

We'll see when my mac pro arrives.
