Hi Everyone,

It's been a couple of years since my last build and that was purely a gaming setup. My boss has asked me to put together a price for a new computer for myself but i don't have time to get reacquainted with all the available components so I was hoping i could rely on you lovely people to put together a shopping list.

I'd like an SSD for the O/S and Autocad to be installed on and a minimum of 1TB in general storage for files etc.

Minimum System Requirements are as below: AutoCAD 2020
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit only), 8.1 (64-bit only), or 7 SP1 (64-bit only)
Processor: 2.5 GHz (3+ GHz recommended)
Memory: 8 GB (16GB recommended)
Disk space: 6.0 GB
Display: 1920 x 1080 resolution with True Color

A ballpark of budget and your typical workload will help. What machine are you coming from, and how long do you expect to use the new one?

All those factors will impact what people recommend you. Also worth noting if you need new peripherals, keyboard, mouse, screen etc :)

I've been working from home on my gaming rig for around two years. I'd like something we can use for 3 years before upgrading if needed. Peripherals i'll need a mouse and keyboard but don't need anything fancy and i want to run dual screen setup. I'd expect to put the rig together for around £500 - £600.

Did you drop a zero? You're not going to do all that for £500, especially if you're including a license for Autocad and two monitors. Autocad's annual subscription fee is £1800.

Do you use AutoCAD all day? It may help if you provide the spec of your existing system, also put in what is driving the upgrade. Is the system slow?

Generally a user of AutoCAD would use a “workstation” class system and was stated before these can easily run to £6,000 or more?

In terms of the “minimum” system requirements, these should be typically ignored and to start at the “recommended” system requirements at a very minimum especially as you want to keep the system for a while!

You may want to look at this guide from Puget Systems to give you some idea...

Is your business building PCs or using PCs? Just buy a workstation from IBM, Dell, HP etc. If you can't go new for what ever reason just buy one that's a year old. It cost a fraction and perform 90% as good. You can literally buy 32GB ECC, Xeon class 6-8 cores, SSD, workstation grade machines for £500 win 10 pro. I bought 2 thinkstations last month for £430 with these specs. These machines cost thousands only a couple of years ago.
