Hi,
I've been asked to upgrade my dad's office pc for about £200.

He has an SSD plus 2x2GB 1600MHz RAM which could be reused so only really needs a cpu and mobo.

He's only using it for basic ms office tasks and web streaming but I'm thinking he may start using it as a media server as well. Not sure how much difference that last bit will make.

What would you suggest? I can't decide if the APU route is best/necessary.

Thanks in advance,
James

hmmm, you're testing my memory now, both a fairly old but the last upgrade was in 2011.

I think the PSU is a Corsair HX520. Fairly certain it's the same as mine.

Couldn't tell you about the case. why? It currently holds a uATX Form Factor mobo, if that helps.

I've taken suggestions from another thread and it would be good to get an idea of how much he needs to spend. (http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18650158)

The A55M-E33 doesn't support SATA 6GB/s and then there's good old Intel vs AMD.

1 x MSI A55M-E33 AMD A55 Chipset (Socket FM2) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £28.99
1 x AMD A4-4000 3.00GHz (Socket FM2) APU Richland Dual Core Processor (AD4000OKHLBOX) £25.99

1 x Gigabyte F2A88XM-HD3 AMD A88X (Socket FM2+) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £49.99
1 x AMD A6-6400K 3.90GHz (Socket FM2) APU Richland Dual Core Processor (AD640KOKHLBOX) £47.99

1 x Intel Pentium K Anniversary G3258 Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £57.59
1 x Gigabyte H81M-D2V Intel H81 (Socket 1150) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £40.99

Also, is 4GB sufficient for windows 8?
