Hi there,

I'm looking to put together a new PC for our home office and would very much appreciate your recommendations on parts to get. I'd like to budget for around 400 (just the box). Although the PC is not being bought to game there are kids in the house so it would be nice to have the option of running games on it.

Thank you in advance!

hi,

came up with the following, could change save money on a different graphics card like the ati 4670, with that you could go for the corsair 400w psu.

could also drop the memory to 2gb if you don't think 4gb will be needed.

Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 4850 PCS 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail £71.99 (£62.60)

Asus M4A78 AMD 770 (Socket AM3/AM2+) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £59.98 (£52.16)

OCZ ModXStream Pro 500w Silent SLI Ready ATX2 Modular Power Supply £52.99 (£46.08)

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 7850+ Black Edition 2.80GHz (Socket AM2+) - Retail £45.99 (£39.99)

Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (WD5001AALS) £44.99 (£39.12)

Corsair XMS2 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX Dual Channel (TWIN2X4096-6400C5C) £33.99 (£29.56)

Coolermaster Elite 334 Midi Case- Black (No PSU) £30.99 (£26.95)

Ty very much for the reply guys.

Unfortunately I'm not living in the UK so buying from OC is a no go. I've just been to the shops looking for the parts above and found:

ASUS M3A78-CM PCI-Express ($80)

Radeon HD 4850 PCI-Express ($129) or 4670 ($100)

Western Digital Caviar 500GB ($60)

OCZ Stealth Xstream 700w ($65) - they didn't have a 500W model in the shop.

Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0GHz e8400 ($180) - the shop didn't have much choice for AMDs, should I definitely buy AMD or is intel ok to go for?

Corsair 4GB DDR2 6400 ($47) or OCZ Performance 4GB DDR2 SLI 6400 ($50)

I had to waiver a bit from what you guys recommended since not all of it was available. The guy in the store was saying the OCZ is great memory but I should be careful with which mobo i use it... something to do with voltage or power might fry the board?

Anyway, please let me know what you think I'd very much appreciate any opinions before I start buying parts.

4850 and wd hard disk are fine.

700w is total overkill, any chance you can shop somewhere else for it, wont need more than 500w for what you want.

motherboard is for an amd processor, if you go for intel go for an asus or gigabyte p43 mobo.

e8400 again is total overkill for what you said you were going to use it for, go for and e5200.

memory wise go for the corsair.
