I can get Office 2008 Mac for £11 through my work's home use agreement with MS, but reading the reviews would suggest that Office Mac is carp! What alternatives are there? Generally I need it for word processing & spreadsheets.

Open Office does the job very well and is very compatible... and £11 less that Office suite.

I use '07 exclusively now, although it did take a good while to make the change from '03, I’d never go back now

Iwork is great, and probably fine for 90% of users. It'll fail you if you need any advanced stuff though. I manage fine for all my needs.

Openoffice/Neooffice is probably more feature complete but less polished.

I have iworks '08, but I've just ordered office. Having a textbox that floats above the text isn't much to ask from Open office/Neo office or iworks is it?

I originally used OOo on my mac and then switched to NeoOffice as it integrates better with OSX. I took the chance to get Office for Mac when I could and I definitely prefer it to either of the other two. There are some things I'd change (basically the toolbox), but in general it works very well and everything is in the same place as it would be in Office03 on the PC - certainly been the best of the bunch so far imo.
