***Official 2010 F1 thread***

...unless there is a radical rule change surrounding aerodynamics and the cars as a whole, then I don't think we'll be seeing any 'classic' racing ...

I think its a little unfair for us to expect the same sort of battles that were seen in the 1970s or 80's. In 2010, I expect to see most of the battles occurring in the courts, in the pitlane and during qualifying. I also fully expect some distasteful things to be said by both Alonso and Hamilton, about eachother. I think as things stand, 2007 is as good as we can expect things to be, where 2 top drivers were going at it with real venom.

In the 70s and 80s, a driver would just go to a driver he has a problem with and grab him by the throat. These days, that sort of behaviour will probably get him punished. So, in 2009, drivers have to resort to other means of attacking their competitors (ie. through the media).

Similarly, in 2009, you can't follow another car closely for an overtake, like you could in the 80's. Hence, overtaking is done in the pits or not at all.

The McLaren looked fantastic under the lights. Especially as they were running it really low and the wear plates in the plank kept touching the ground...

It did look great

They tend to have the car sprung quite stiffly and low anyway. You tend to see the unloaded inside front tyre lifting off the ground through corners on tracks. Locking up is more common too compared to any other car.

The Singapore track suited their car though.

I guess the Singapore race talk should be in the other thread though :p Keep this on topic.

Depends on the race track. There are more overtaking moves on some race tracks that mainly involve hard braking. KERS has helped in some cases to overtake but then again, its made it pretty much impossible for a 'non' KERS car overtake a KERS car.

In my view, they need to get shot of more aero parts and make the parts smaller to decrease the 'dirty' air and allow cars to follow closer together.

They did that this year remember. Going by F1 mag they think the engineers have claimed back 80% or something ridiculous! Incredible.

I think getting rid of diffusers would help but you have to remember that things have moved on from the 70s/80s and that aero will always be a such a major part of F1 and we'll never see the amount of overtaking in the past again imo. But people will always keep moaning with their rose tinted glasses on.

Just bring back bloody invention. re allow engine and the 101 other things they have banned :(..
If they want to look green, allow teams to start playing with fuel cells and electric motors. Probably wouldn't see them for years but at least allows design and investment. which would have practical public use. Or slash fuel tank size and allow any engine capacity and any induction or other engine technology and then slowly over the years keep reducing the fuel tank size.

Bring back what f1 is about Technological advancement. And I don't mean just getting he last 2% out of aerodynamics. By using incredible amounts of resources and money for stupidly small gains.

If you want loads of overtaking, go watch a same car series, which aren't aero dynamic.

But sad to say I don't think we will ever see such rules or changes :(

But you can't have rampant tech in the cars or they would be self-driving by now. Just program the track in with GPS, use active suspension and wings on the corners and set them off.

I like the idea of limited fuel and open engine technology though.

spray the track with water halfway through , get some new track where at parts the track splits in two at like a Y section but so each part is a mirror image of each other :p (why has this never been done anyway?)

Because the drivers would all end up going down the split with the most rubber laid on it and the unused split would be as bad as trying to overtake offline.

Im glad Im not the only one who feels this way about Button

EDIT - Apologies Sunama, I just read that exact blog and have linked it in my post - All great minds think alike!

and who was it who crashed out at Monza trying to put pressure on "2nd string Button".......oooohh yes its the mighty Hamilton

as for Teflonso, someday the **** will stick, a cheat going to the biggest team of cheats around (and two faced given what they said in court about Brawn earlier this year) - should fit right in;)

Hope you enjoy your rose-tinted glasses

Hamilton wasnt going for points. He was going for the overtake. Had he been challenging for the title, then he probably wouldnt have done something so silly. Bear in mind that at that track, the McLaren wasnt as quick as the BrawnGP cars.

Trying to overtake Button, who was over a second ahead, in the last lap was a little silly though.

If you guys fancy a laugh and can read spanish, go to the marca website and read the comments left by the fans, on the alonso news. Its all about how the next 5 wdc tittles are his and that he is the greatest ever, won the wdc with a very bad car, the man who retired summi etc. I hope he doesn't win anything. Starts with a c ends with a t.

Exactly my point - Hamilton isnt as great as some want to make out

Great guy, and may well turn out to re-write all the history books, but right now he isnt so fabulous (Canadian pitlane should be re-named Hamilton Row :D)

Nice armchair. Button was coming across traffic up ahead, Hamilton thought he had half a chance of pulling a Mika I guess...

gone are the days when drivers are allowed to go all out and take risks , welcome for bormula one. :p

i hate how drivers more often than not play it far to safe these days whats wrong with pushing hard or trying a slightly dangerous overtake? other world champions did it all the time so why not hamilton? surely its what makes them world champions in the first place.

even mika hakkinen who was probably the most boring racing driver of all time off the track showed some balls when racing
