When was the track built?

The man-made Notre Dame Island in the middle of the St Lawrence River was created for the 1967 Expo 67 World's Fair. Once the expo and the ensuing 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics had left town, some clever people decided to make a race track out of the island’s roads. And lo, the Circuit Ile Notre-Dame, as it then was, came to be.

When was its first Grand Prix?

With the Canadian Grand Prix having been in search of a permanent home for a number of years in the 1960s and 1970s, the Circuit Ile Notre-Dame first hosted the race in 1978. Fittingly, Gilles Villeneuve claimed his maiden win, at the track that would end up bearing his name.

What’s the circuit like?

The fast, low-downforce circuit is one of the drivers’ favourites. The track is quite stop-start, with lots of heavy-braking chicanes and the famous hairpin to get the anchors working hard. Out of the corners, though, the track is quick and flowing, while the most iconic piece of the circuit comes right at the end of the lap: the Wall of Champions, so-called after excursions into it from Damon Hill, Jacques Villeneuve and Michael Schumacher during the 1999 Canadian Grand Prix weekend.

Why go?

The Montrealais really embrace their Grand Prix weekend, with the charming city turning into an F1-loving party town in the week leading up to the race. For the Grand Prix itself, the leafy setting makes the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve one of Formula 1’s most laidback venues.

Where is the best place to watch?

It’s got to be one of either Grandstand 15, 21 or 24, the three that surround the hairpin. It makes for a real amphitheatre vibe down there, as well as allowing you to see all the hairpin overtakes.

Just a reminder, but consider it a warning - can we not have any further derogatory name calling of drivers, team bosses and the like. We don't expect you to like every driver/team, but at least keep comments respectful.

If you don't follow this warning, you will lose access to the race thread and the thread for the following race as well.

This includes but is not limited to such terms including Lulu, Crashstappen, Karen Horner, Whingey Spice etc.

with regard to the 2011 race… probably Jensons greatest win but far from his greatest drive.

Collision with team mate resulting in damage, then got penalty for speeding in pits, then took out Alonso, spun once again but somehow lucked out on the right tyres at the right moment because he had nothing to lose with strategy due to the horrendous first half of the race which involved six visits to pit lane.

Final stint was good but the amount of people who overate that performance is insane, like they never watched the race and just saw the final stint.

Still one of the GOAT moments of modern f1 though but the amount of luck to win that race after all the issues beforehand was insane.

Do enjoy Canada, though I can't get excited at the prospect of wet races anymore.

If it goes beyond the need for inters they just red flag the race. Then they just wait for it to be dry again or they all just pootle around on inters until they become "slicktermediates" and have no need to stop again and you have another Monaco situation.

God I sound old. :o

Still annoyed I got all the way home from the Isle of Wight festival on the Monday, avoiding the result got about 5 minutes from getting off the train and saw the headline on the back of someones newspaper :( Still didn't believe it could happen when I was rewatching it back when I got home.

I kinda hope it doesn't rain, as I'd like to see if all this talk of a RB decline actually holds any weight or not! I guess it'll make for a spectacle though.

Track changes since last year:
• The track has been fully resurfaced.
• All kerbs have been replaced with new kerbs of the same specifications.
• The track surface between Turn 7 and Turn 8 has been lowered to increase the clearance between track and the Concorde Bridge to min. 4.0 m.
• The opening before Turn 2 on LHS at Pit Exit has been moved a few meters further downstream.
• The access road into Turn 5 and Turn 7 has been asphalted.
• The run-off at Turn 8 has been rebuilt with asphalt and grass. The walls have been realigned.
• The grass behind the kerb in Turn 1, Turn 3 and Turn 6 has been replaced with concrete.
• All walls have been realigned to guarantee 1.0 m height.
• The walls at pit exit have realigned on LHS at Pit Exit.
• The debris fence on LHS after Turn 11 has been upgraded to 3.5 m height.
• All TSP have a min. height of 2.5 m.
• The white line between Turn 2 and Turn 3 on LHS has been moved closer to the wall (1.8 m).
• The white line between Turn 7 and Turn 8 on LHS has been moved closer to the wall (1.8 m)

So in the past 30 minutes there's been rain, hail and waves down the water front/lake.

Will anyone brave FP1? Or sit and wait until the last 10 minutes hoping it will dry out.
