Imola

Imola – or the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari as it’s been known since 1988 – had its foundation stone laid in March 1950. It was ready for testing by October 1952, while racing began at the circuit in 1953.

Imola first hosted a non-championship F1 race in 1963, but it would take some politicking with Monza in 1980 before the track was awarded the honour of hosting the Italian Grand Prix for the first time that year. From 1981, the two tracks worked together in perfect harmony, with Imola taking on its famous ‘San Marino’ title, and going on to host a total of 27 Grands Prix up until 2006. It returned as venue for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in 2020.

A thrill ride. After testing his AlphaTauri AT01 at the track in the build-up to the 2020 season, Pierre Gasly called the experience one of the best he’d ever had in a Formula 1 car, while his then-team mate Daniil Kvyat remarked that “an F1 car through corners like Acque Minerali – the entrance is so fast, it’s so cool. It really gives you a lot of adrenaline.” The anti-clockwise circuit is certainly fast, with an old-school feel as the drivers put it on the line in iconic corners like the aforementioned Acque Minerali and Piratella.

Like neighbouring Mugello, Imola is nestled in a fantastic part of the world, with the Tuscan hills to the south, the Adriatic beaches to the east and the gastronomic delights of cities like Bologna, Parma and Modena to the west – as well as the F1 mecca that is Ferrari’s HQ in nearby Maranello. There’s also no getting around the fact that a visit to Imola is an opportunity for F1 fans to pay their respects to Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger, who lost their lives at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.

I’m interested to see if the rumours of Hamilton finding the flaw in the Ferrari’s floor design are true and whether someone’s going to file an official protest about the alleged phase change materials supposedly used by McLaren in their cars braking system.

Red Bull have been all bluster about McLaren's brakes. Typical Horner that he's all mouth and no trousers. He's simply trying to make enough noise about it so that more teams are enticed to join any protest that's made and the FIA are forced to reverse their decision that it's completely legal.

They're probably still hurt that the FIA ruled their asynchronous braking illegal last year :p

This is just a normal part of F1. There's nothing new about protesting against your competitors. They all do it.

There's protesting, and then there's lying that you have evidence that another team is using water to cool their tyres and banging on about it several months. RB need to either **** or get off the toilet.

What has Horner said recently then? Got any quotes?

Either way if McLaren have done nothing wrong and the FIA are happy why are you getting your knickers in a twist?

They were adamant it was water cooling the tyre, hence Zak Brown sitting on the pit wall with a drink bottle labeled tyre water :D

Has a history of producing poor racing despite being an iconic circuit (a running theme in F1)

Norris is strong here and probably would have won last year without the safety car.

Hard to look past a McLaren 1/2, especially with the track in theory not suiting Red Bull or Merc

Genuinely curious why it's not just called Imola?

Also the other Grand Prix are called by the country name. Why isn't it the case for this race?

Not always, the “European GP” used to be held in England, the Miami and Las Vegas GPs are called by the place name as the United States GP is the one held at CoTA.

I love Imola for the history, and just the beauty of the track, but it's just not suited to current F1 cars so I'm not holding my breathe for a great race.

@chrismscotland I think you have a mistake on the time for the Sky Qualifying coverage?

Did they forget that Oscar won in Miami?

Jesus, dude, you don't need to quotepost an entire long post to add a single line response!

Hahaha, good spot. @chrismscotland was that you or your source?

Sorry; that's been me - totally forgot!

Nurburgring hosted the European GP for a while as well
