***official amd 83x0 overclocking thread***

You can run MSI Afterburner to get an overlay which shows your GPU and CPU usage. You'd probably find in this game that the CPU isn't maxed out. Here's an example:

See that the results don't change regardless of even Intel or AMD - it's limited by the GPU.

In games where the GPU is holding you back you'd gain nothing from higher CPU speeds, no. If you ran at 3GHz you might find that your CPU becomes too slow and the results fall. Either the CPU or GPU will hold you back in each game, which one depends on the game.

Getting a better card would give higher results in games like Tomb Raider, Bioshock Infinite, Aliens V Predator, etc. as your CPU is more than good enough to run them as far as your GPU can handle them.

If you want to increase FPS at max settings in as many games as possible I'd look at two HIS IceQ 7950s :) Amazing performance for under £400.

i see your point so no point pushing for 5 yet as i wont gain and i dnt need extra heat for no gain lol i will more than likely buy the asus matrix card as they do a water block for it test on hold then for now

to be continued............

should i keep adding to this thread or start a new next week? these dont get deleted do they?

No, it depends on the games. BF3 multiplayer for example hits the CPU quite hard, so 5GHz will almost definitely improve over 4.8GHz there. If you have games like World of Tanks or Rome Total War 2, these also hit the CPU very hard.

Threads aren't deleted no.

I edited the last post with more info in case you didn't see it :)

i see loads of posts all over net on 8350 overclocking and most are not detailed or have any evidence to back up there overclock i want to post some real results for people to use in overclocking 8350 and test its true performance suggestions guys?

I did loads of testing when the 8350 first came out last October and there was a massive thread the name of which I cannot remember but it had lots of 'what if' scenarios and motherboard set up information.

Quite a few people were getting 5GHz but not prime stable, Lots got to 4.6-4.7 with prime. What needs remembering with the 8350 and prime though is the fact that there are eight cores spinning along at 5Ghz and that is bound to create large amounts of heat. I do not recommend long stability testing at 5GHz. I was happy getting 4 workers at 4.9GHz to cooperate.

The next little task was to acheive ten consecutive runs of IBT with 100GFlops minimum per run. This I did at 4.8GHz 300 bus and 2GHz memory using a large memory size.

For 5GHz I was using 1.49V, this was set manually in the bios and not an offset as I am doing now. The phanteks were spinning at max and managed to hold the CPU temperature at 67C during encoding on eight cores.

The last six months or so I have just been using it at about 4.75GHz where it is quite able to handle all my tasks.

is cross fire any good? i hear horror stories about sli and crossfire and games not running right?

i would need new psu then as well though?

i know where there is another 7970 like mine although there voltage locked two would give increase surely?

Crossfire has been given some love lately by AMD and performs well albeit not perfect to some. I have two 7770's (I know budget -lol) and the new drivers have made gaming a lot smoother and less fussy to set up.

Your PSU looks ok to support two cards.

I would watch and see what new card prices are and then check the MM for people selling.

Dam this thread !!
Had to start messing around with the PD again.
I had forgotten quite how much heat it generates.

Some time ago i did buy an EK 240 WC kit.
The radiator is real thick though and fitting it looks to be a lot of hassle.
With hindsight perhaps i should have gone for a kit with a thinner RAD.

Well the big orange box is staring at me from the corner of the room.

On this specific point, would one of them out of the box water coolers i.e. cooler master 240/corsiarhydro 110 do the job on the 8320?

I have heard it said that the AIO coolers are no better than good AIR.
Silver Arrow, Phantek, D14 etc.

To put things into perspective here are my results:
