*****Official Ashes thread*****

Starting to think that this summer might be embarrassing :(

That said, the ball is apparently moving, so hopefully it will continue to do so for Jimmy.

I assume that we lost the toss? Really should have bowled first under clouds at Trent Bridge otherwise.

England won the toss. I was a bit confused on why we didn't elect to bowl first.

For the Aussies?? quite possibly:p...i dont think the Aussies are that much stronger batting or bowling wise compared to England. Was watching something on SSN earlier this morning regarding how many spinners the Aussies have used since Warne retired...something like 12-13 so far. Aussies are really missing a world class spinner, England at least have Swann or Panesar to choose from.

Still think Engladn will retain the Ashes in the end.

An old adage, but you can't tell until both teams have batted - though looking at the pitch and how many bowlers footmarks there are already, I suspect Swann will enjoy bowling last.....

England batted first because it's the right decision on the pitch. The weather less important today IMO.

Shame that we've given some soft wickets.

The Aussies bowling is awful.

Rhubarb balls :D

Another Ashes, another good old English collapse to kick us off. Totally useless batting.

Imagine this lot trying to bat against McGrath, Lee and Warne.

They didn't bad first due to the pitch. Will be useful for the spinners towards the last few days.

Still think it's a poor shout. We've arguably got the best swing bowlers in the world at present, and the Aussies have a young and inexperienced batting lineup. Play Bresnan and Jimmy, get the ball hooping around on the first morning, and you've got them on the back foot for the rest of the series. As it is, we've given them confidence.

Thankfully for England they have retired:p Also luckily for England, Mike Hussey retired as well...other than Clarke, he has been Australias best batsman for a long time.

Bresnan isnt playing, England plumped for Finn instead.

Steyn is the best swing bowler (and, in fact, best bowler according to ICC rankings) in the world.

Unless you judge him as a fast bowler even though he's well capable of swing, and even getting reverse swing.

Poor shot from Prior, I know that's his game, but he needed to knuckle down a bot and give some stability. Hopefully get 250 and have a good go at these while the cloud is still about.

Since we split the coaching with Flower only popping into the picture for tests our batting in all formats has gone down the gutter :/

Its especially frustrating to be out classed thus far by Siddle, who's the definition of lucky joe average. How on earth he got so high in the rankings ill never know - must be a proper drought of decent bowlers out there.

-edit-
I should add, England's bowlers for the most part also fall into that category.
