**- Official ATI 3870X2 OVERCLOCKING Thread -**

can anyone try running Rivatuner hardware monitor while playing Crysis ?

in full screen mode - it seems to be 100% most of the time GPU usage - but occasionaly spiking down to 60 ot 80%

windowed mode = fixed 100% all the time

I have just done a re-run of 3dmark 06 with my CPU at stock (keeps on freezing during UT3). After uninstalling the gfx drivers (8.1s) and also .net framework 2 (CCC wasnt working), and running Driver Cleaner, i reinstalled .net framework and the basic 8.1 drivers.
Using CCC i ramped up the GPU to 850 and ran the benchmark.

Scored an amazing 13652, lol. i know that the CPU score would go down, but the HDR result went down from 8000 to 5800 and the SM2.0 score went down from 7146 to around the 6000 mark.

Now that i have the basic drivers installed, is it best to install the .2 hotfix or the .4 hotfix over the top, as i am slightly bemused as to why my score has dropped so low.

It was posted on one of the 3870X2 threads, cant remember which one though. They link to the ATI/AMD website where u can get them from.

I was a bit confused about the .4 hotfix as by the description it only fixed DX10 issues and AGP issues. As i have neither i don't know whether i would get any benefits.

I shall try and have a look and see if i can get the links.

/Edit This looks to be one of them i think (the .2 i think):

I cant even open that AMD GPU Clock tool it just gives me an error message saying no valid devices found... :(

Lol, just tried the drivers that i linked to and it doesnt recognise any compatible hardware, oh dear.

Oh well, i can live with current performance as only running 1280x1024 with max settings on everything so will have to just look forward to the 8.2s

Supposedly 0.1.5 doesn't show fillrate correctly, at least that's what a quick glance at the gpu-z forums told me, probably just fixed in 0.1.6 that's why you're getting the lower(and possibly correct, i have nothing to compare it to so don't want to conclude anything) score.

your pixel and texture fillrates appear to be twice as high as mine were, 6.7 or something ???? i managed to clock to 3.6 on my q6600 which improved the 3dmark scores but those figures didnt change?

They are correct. You calculate the fillrates by multiplying the core frequency with the number of ROPs.

932,000,000 x 16 = 14,912,000,000Pixels/s = 14.9GPixels/s

Also the memory bandwidth is calculated by multiplying the memory frequency with the memory bandwidth and then converting bits to bytes and then multipyling by 2 for DDR RAM..

[(1,100,000,000 x 256)/8] x 2 = 70,400,000,000 B/s = 70.4GB/s.

Why you were seeing lower fillrates was probably because for some reason gpu-z was reading 2dclocks.

that makes no sense then, my msi default was 850core sore 850,000,000 x 16 blah blah doesnt make anywhere near 6.xx GPixels/s????, sorry i just re read your post but why would gpuz read 3d on one persons pc and 2d on another using same version of gpuz?????

It might be reading 2dclocks for everyone. However, he overclocked his and therefore ati powerplay hasnt swicthed clocks down to 2d clocks andtherefore gpu-z reads those. For example, use rivatuner to overclock the card to a fixed clock and then open gpu-z.

This is a guess, but it seems likely since the default clocks are wrong.

I can guarantee that in that picture posted, the Gpixels/s figure is correct for that ROP count anc clock speed. Itd have to a big concidence for my calculation to equal the gpixel/s figure given :).

edit: If you run into the pll lock at 857mhz, just underclock it to 843mhz and itll still have the desired effect.

schumi84, first off i'd guess your gpu-z isn't recognising crossfire? his is, double the theoretical fillrate, either way its just an app, it doesn't read something right doesn't mean it isn't working right. gpu-z is mostly not showing crossfire on vista at all and seems to only notice crossfire on some setups, maybe only certain mobo's who knows, doesn't show as crossfired for me.

as for your sm2/3 scores they scale up/down a crapload with cpu speed, if you've gone from overclocked down to stock sm2/3 scores will have changed to correspond with that ;)

the .2 drivers aren't hotfix, they are full drivers, installed fine for me, they are NEWER than the .4 hotfix which is an old hotfix. they aren't full driver releases expect it to work like this. 8.1 is released, one team, the X2 team works on drivers for their product and calls them 8.1--2xxxxxxx's. another team, game driver team works on crysis, makes 8.12xxxx hotfix, not very good work on another revision 8.13xxx, and then they work on 8.14xxxxx and that, works so they release that hotfix so you have 8.1 cat's installed with 8.14xxxxx hotfix. for the review, the X2 team sent out their differently named driver, its not 8.2 yet so they gave kept inbetween name.

either way, it doesn't seem great for me in COD4, the newest review drivers. need to uninstall and try the 8.1 plain, then the 8.1 plus the normal hotfix(.4) those are the only official drivers. the review ones for this card probably didn't get all that much testing, review rigs are likely to be fairly sparse on software, similar quadcore intel setups and so on and not likely to test all games so its probably gonna have issues somewhere with some games so bare that in mind if you try it.

So a "Asus P5K Premium/WiFi-AP Intel P35" would support two of these?

XD-3

Edit: Also this is probably old news but. "This isn't surprising however given the presence of chips certified to work at 1 GHz." (Tom's H) :)

Cheers for the heads up on the drivers and their different revisions etc drunkenmaster, very helpful. With regards to GPU-Z, it is showing as xfire enabled, and when i select the two different cores, the fill rate stays the same but the core speed changes from one to the other.

Now that i have done a fresh install of the drivers and now have CCC working again, i may try the .4s again, are you using Vista, as i am not so not sure whether i will see a difference in performance. with them installed, as said before, the release notes dont state that they improve anything for XP or DX9.
