****OFFICIAL I7 980x HEX CORE OVERCLOCKING THREAD****

never come down to £200 in 2 years

I think your correct, I was being two optimistic there.

Hex core will reduce a lot when AMD have 6 core available. We should be gratefull for AMD as without AMD Intel would get away with crazy prices for all their chips.

£800 for a chip reminds me of 25 years ago when the first 386DX chips came out, no competition for Intel x86 chips back then.

AMD can bring out as many hex core CPU's they want, the 980X will not drop in price. It's an Extreme Edition. £800+ for these CPU's is normal, all EE's have had these prices. Even the quad 975 EE is still over £800. There will be a non EE hex core later in the year from Intel.

Anyway i've got one coming, i'll OC the **** out of it and post results. Probs wont be 'til Tuesday at earliest though.

It's a huge amount of cash but I guess it's all relative to the amount you have to burn! More relevant I think is whether you can make use of all that power, benchmarking aside...I wouldn't say don't buy one though, after all since when did hobbies make financial sense:D

Yeah it's ridiculous to buy one of these just for benchmarking unless you're filty rich.

I'll be OC-ing mine as much as possible, but i bought it for the 3D rendering and video editing/encoding that i do.

Due tomorrow. Bit weird to start this thread when the OP doesn't have one, nor any overclocking results from one. What makes it "official"?

Benchmarks [post=16165766]here[/post] anyway

He used capitals and stars, therefore it's official. He forgot to throw in 'OMG', but this will do so long.

Anyway, thinking about this. Thinking thinking thinking. Thoughts of justification is swirling around my skull but I cannot justify the price yet.
Looking forward to see tangible numbers from forum members so that the decision process is simplified.

Burning money for ladder positions is still burning money ^_^

Anyone could buy a benchmark position but you're only going to be there for a short while before someone glomps you. How can you benchmark in a totally unique and unrepeatable way that no one else can possibly do... with standard hardware.

At best you can say you were "first" to anyone who will listen :p

ahhh the good old trying to trick yourself into find a justifiable reason to buy the latest and greatest from the tech world. i spend a good while before every purchase lieing to myself in just that way :P

its obvious...

.....you say this....yet you feel the need to add

waiting for... acer 24" 120hz 3D

to your sig...

I started the thread as someone was going to. So what, I did it before I got one....get over it.

Some of the OC's on this thus far make for tasty reading. It is very expensive though as the OC'd bundle alone that OCULK are doing, is more than a custom built I7 920 rig with all bells and whistles on.

I'm sure someone on here will get it though for bragging rights ;)

V nice !!!! How are your temps under load??? Just curious because your v core is lower than the few others that have posted so far. How does the chip feel generally - worth it???
