***Official Intel Haswell Thread***

Obviously not. But I'm in the market for an upgrade to a gaming system and they're both viable options for that purpose. I'm hesitant on 3960X because Ivy-E isn't far, but there's the whole solder issue that we're waiting to see about on X79 versions. And it seems atm to be a potentially similar story with Haswell. There are rumours that its a really good overclocker, but others that it has similar heat issues to Ivy. So be as sarcastic as you like, but I'm not going to jump in one boat or the other until I have a better idea of what's happening.

I would go for a 3930k or wait for IB-E

I own three X79 chips, in order of speed/performance

My 3970X is the slowest
My 3960X is in the middle
My 3930k beats the other two easy lol.

Those numbers are disappointing. Maybe they will be better clockers but right now it looks like Ivy is a better buy, especially when you consider the premium that you will have to pay for month or two after release.

10%+ price for <10% performance increase...

Woot? That's bizarre. Is that generally true or just what you got in the silicon lottery?

How many people with i3930s are considering an upgrade? I'm wondering if the mm will suddenly have a few for sale at decent prices for a newcomer to socket 2011.

Kaapstad read it yesterday and well it looks like ivy+ cant see more than 4% increase in mhz to mhz performance :/

I for one am not expecting anything more than 5% increase clock for clock anywho. I am however expecting:

Power savings
Better IMC
Better IGP

That's all that really matters for these CPUs really, especially for Intel.

wait for the new xbox/playstation at the end of the year. then get a new processor

Sane advice!

the vrm's are inside the cpu aren't they on haswell? that would increase the temps aswell, might explain why you need newer power supplies too?

There's some type of VRM's, not like the proper beefy ones on boards.
The power supply thing is mainly scaremongering (Given you know how many PSU's from the past 5 years support it), and it's about the low power draw.

So are we taking this article with a pinch of salt as well? It seems to me that the new successor of the 3570K is actually cheaper and barely any performance increase at all...

Haswell isn't about IPC gains.
It'll probably be about 5% IPC gain (Similar to Ivy over SB)
So upto about 10% IPC gain over SB.
But it's all upto how it clocks under air/water.

I want to get a 4770K if they clock well, but I've just reverted my CPU to stock as I honestly don't need the power, so I might just give it a miss and go for an SR when they launch or something.
