***Official Intel Haswell Thread***

Didnt they say packaged wouldn't be used, cos you cant open the box and sell it as new. The only way to offer bundles with 'good' cpus is to test them.

Exactly but they shouldn't be selling them as new even if they are OEM. I've always had a decent experience from Overclockers and their reputation is certainly improving from what it used to be but stories like this always make you think twice. Hopefully we'll see some clarification. Good luck returning it.

Never buy OEM cpu's you can bet your life it has been tested and all the good ones are kept for the OC systems. I bet most retailers do this tbh.

I think that's a retail cpu but without the cooler, for those that don't want the cooler but want the 3 year warranty, and want to save the environment by not binning new coolers.

Theres no point buying OEM cpu's if all have been speed binned, as they are pre selected for overclocked systems and this goes for any etailer, I cant see OCUK speed binning evey OEM CPU though as it would be an immense task to do so.

After all its a silicon lottery even with retail CPU's no CPU is certain to reach a specific speed. now if i remember rightly i read OCUK will sell speed binned pre tested CPU's that offer good over clocking on site soon, but obviously i would imagine pre tested will mean a slight price increase which someone has to be paid to test them.

The problem with Ivy and haswell is the ***P thermal paste inbetween the ICH and CPU silicon itself. you can delid it but that invalidates your warranty and is still no certainty that they will clock well at all. even if you reduce the heat from them, the IMC is also a lottery to a point, one chip could run 2600mhz ram and be a high V core. another could be a great clocker with low V core but have a poor IMC. its pot luck to be fair.

With my Ivy i was lucky it will do 5G at 1.25v core and 2600mhz memmory and i didnt have to delid it either which was a bonus! but i always lap my CPU's which again invalidates the warranty. I did find i had 2 high corners on my ICH and after lapping it was nice and flat but warranty void.

I was going to go over to haswell but i think i might go 3930k now and part with my sweet ivy CPU and asus sabertooth Z77 board as they both clock very well.

decisions decisions;) the mind boggles!

So has anyone delidded Haswell and found out what **** TIM is being used underneath IHS ?

it has been done, and there are tiny little resistors sitting under it aswell which isnt on Ivy CPU's and yes its the same paste used on ivy.

installed my 4670k :D

effortless to get windows up and running again without reinstalling it :D
Just got to sort my ram timings out and get my cd drive to show up

new gigabyte bios is crap and laggy btw press f2 for classic mode which is far easier to navigate

Ah crap...

I ordered my CPU and mobo this evening, went with the OEM CPU option and after reading up on this thread im some what concerned.

Order arrives tomorrow so I will be checking it in great detail.

Lets us know how you get on clocking it, temps, volts ect.

I don't overclock :|

arknor: what were you running before, i was going to do a fresh windows install to avoid issues.

I was running an amd x6 1055T

didn't bother uninstalling anything I just turned off the pc and switched the bits over, windows made me reboot about 3x when it was installing drivers etc but it's been running great so far

Yeah have a good old look over it, i noticed mine straight away, the foam pad that the cpu came sandwiched in had thermal paste stains on it and could see flakes of thermal paste inside the box :(. And to be fair the CPU wasnt that well protected in the foam as the CPU was sliding about inside the small box

Haven't used overclockers in quite some time, no competitor talk! is normally my first stop but I was surprised to see they aren't the cheapest this at this time.

Should I find my CPU to be in the same state as yours, you can be sure I will advertise it as wide and loud across other community's... but not before returning it :D

I've had OEM CPU's in the past and nothing bad has ever come of it though. My last was quite sometime ago, an AM2 Phenom II 940 and boy did that oc like a beast.

Running my 4670 at 4.4ghz with 1.2v on the vcore and appears to be stable so far. 4.6 gave BSOD.

Very pleased with the upgrade from Q9650 after a few years of not using my desktop.
