Had to be done! :D

So, what are people getting with their new iPads (when they can actually order them!)? It seems like iPad 2 cases should fit just fine, although camera cutouts will probably be too small..

I've been going naked + slipcase for my pocket with the 4S, and will probably do something similar with this. Slipcase for when I chuck it in my work bag, something funky like so:
http://www.colcasac.com/ipad-sleeve/

Then a smart cover for propping it up on the desk. Now, smart covers. What's better than the official Apple ones? Anything well-regarded?

Bigger camera so iPad 2 cases will probably fail in that area. I'd imagine your typical sleeve will fit the new one okay give it's <1mm difference, but I'd avoid buying iPad 2 cases until the companies update their sites.

Actually, you lot could help me out here! I ordered an ipad this morning, mostly for doing actual work on - lots of typing / presentations etc both at home, on the sofa, train and at the office. But I quite fancy getting a physical bluetooth keyboard to use with it - and my desktop PC. I'm looking for something 'somewhat' portable, but not something so tiny that typing becomes an issue.

Any ideas? I was looking at the Logitech DiNovo edge, which looks ok - but I'd have no use for the media functionality on it, and although cost isn't a huge issue, £110 seems like a lot for just a keyboard! The Microsoft one's looked ok as well, but they seemed to need a USB dongle, which is an issue for the iPad of course?

Get the Apple Wireless keyboard (can get them 2nd hand quite easily, but get the 2 battery version rather than the 3), a keyboard sleeve (they exist) and a stand for the iPad. Ultimately this is going to be better than any of the iPad keyboard cases as from what I've seen they all use gash keys and feel terrible to write on.

Errr... just the black one, forget the name. The blue one and dark brown one were contenders but my work bag's black so I thought I'd just be boring and colour co-ordinate.

Right, so now I have the thing (still waiting for the Colcasac although it's shipped).

I can tell that I'm going to want something for using the iPad on either my lap or in bed at home, as I want to use both hands without keeping it perfectly flat on my legs. I've seen the Wedge-E which is another USA product, anything in the UK/EU which is similar?

Who ever got colcsac can the new iPad with smart cover fit in?

With both the iPad 2 and this one, you specify whether it's for a naked iPad or one w/smart cover, as to get a snug fit for both requires a minor sizing adjustment.

Also, I've come up with a great idea for an iPad case, of sorts. Cliff notes on how you get from prototype (quite feasible for me) to finished article please lol.

Meh, sod my idea. Getting this:

Don't really want to give my money to that poison dwarf in Germany, but this is easily the best 'for bed/sofa' thing I've seen - not least because you can just lob it across the room when you're done with it.

Hi there

Yes it will fit with the smart cover on, its a bit of a close/tight fit but I would imagine after a few weeks of use the case will stretch a bit.

At least with a slight tight fit it will not fall out of the colcsac which is a bonus.

Hope this helps?

When you order you're given the option of:

iPad
iPad 2 naked
iPad 2 w/smart cover
iPad 3rd gen naked
iPad 3rd gen w/smart cover

Probably minor size differences, but enough to mean a smart cover Colcasac will be easier to pop the appropriate iPad w/cover in.

Because I'm awesome and a nerd, I'm working with Fatsac on a prototype 'Fatsacs for iPad' type thing. There doesn't seem to be any comparable products sold within the UK, so I thought I'd try and push to get one made!

Anyway, the idea will simply be a cushion/pillow/bag type thing that you can just plop your iPad onto in either landscape or portrait to give you freedom to use the iPad at a comfortable viewing angle with both hands when in bed/on the sofa, and, crucially when you're done you can just toss it into a corner as there's nothing to break.

Would that kind of thing appeal to people? Fatsac make amazing memory foam 'bean bags' which can be ordered in several fabrics in a variety of colours (you can also send them your own fabric) - which are all removable/replaceable, so you can get one and have your iPad one disguised as a matching cushion. :D

Indeed. Profit relative to labour in terms of the sewing/materials is the thing for them, as well as size as there's a point where it gets too small/fiddly to be worth it. I don't want it to be too big, but obviously it needs to be self-supporting for portrait mode etc.

I guess the idea is a kind of comfortable, squishy, 'stuff into a travel bag/use in the car/train/plane, as well as home use, take anywhere' sort of thing, that works with any tablet, with the materials/colours choice leave some room for personal preference. Removable cover/fabric means they can be cleaned easily too. Obviously it's not as smart as a fixed aluminium stand, but you can't throw that across the room or just ram it into your bag.

Should be a fun exercise in making it functional, and ultimately even if they decide not to go with it I'll have a prototype or two to use.

Still waiting for my Colcasac. Got a UPS number but I can't get it to work. Should have got a cheapie back up case as I'm not putting it naked in my work bag for nights this week.

Oh yeah, two things that are cool:

1) Handmade iPad cases on Etsy (not sure if they'll ship to the UK)
2) Those decals that go on the back like I've seen on Macbook Pros. Obviously only good if you go naked, but there's some fun designs out there.

Got my prototype iPad Fatsac in the mail. Came with a load of wadding and memory foam - the latter definitely works better. Got a few areas that can be improved upon and it will take a while to work out the right amount of memory foam chunks to use inside to balance malleabliltiy and support but it's working out pretty well as is so shouldn't need too many revisions.

If anyone has any interest in a simple one-piece, parts free means of comfortably using the iPad with both hands in bed, on the sofa, in your lap and so on, that you can step on/throw at people's heads and avoids 'iPad wrist' and awkward typing angles, watch this space...

Colcasac! Seems like an easy fit for the iPad, but if you just jam it in the thing looks all twisted and wrong. You have to line it up so it goes in below the seams inside (and it's a very soft interior!). Feels like it should keep my iPad nice and safe in my work bag.

Mine was exactly the same. I was sat wondering where it was and the postman delivered it with all the regular post. I ordered on... the 15th I think, and I received it on the 27th.
