Haven't played chess in a long time and wouldn't be familiar with a lot of the terminolgy I see in this thread. However, will maybe get round to signing up and having a game.

Good idea btw.

Have always wanted to learn chess and so here goes - on Chess.com as maustin - just bear in mind I will be VERY bad.

Edit: I am worse than I imagined and keep missing the obvious - any recommendations on beginners books? Enjoying the game though don't know why I have never got around to learning to play.

Okay, I've updated the list. We just need a few more interested parties and a kind member (I don't know if you're able to Platypus?) make us our own group and away we go!

Glad to see so many people willing to get involved. :)

Maustin, I can't seem to find your profile?

Challenge me to an unrated game and I'll talk you through the basics. I've just read Bobby Fischer Teaches You Chess. It's definitely a book that you'll find worthwhile. You can pick it up for < £4 at the moment too, so no excuse! :p

I'm tempted I must say but its been so long and I wasn't really that good in the first place lol. I'm ok to start with, but seem to fail once things get a bit to engaged if you know what I mean.

Holly :D

I'm not a fan of online chess, because I don't know if I'm playing against a human or a computer. I mean, have a program like Chessmaster open in one window, set to grandmaster difficults. You play the moves your opponent makes into CM, it gives you the best reply, which you then put into the web game.

Well I'm hoping that those members who'd like to join and genuinely improve their game/have fun, would be above 'cheating'.

Aaah!! KR-KN7

Spot On Joe! A waiting move by white, whatever move black makes, white can mate him on the next move.

ah yes. a skewer is a lot easier in that formation. I have never heard of spike being used in this sense though.

Yes you're right just my terminology that's wrong.

I actually managed to find a web site which gave full details of how to record a part played game, with an extra key to show who had the next move, whether they were allowed to castle, if p x p en passant on the next move etc.

A good beginners book, if it's still in print is: Logical Chess move by move. If I remember correctly there was a comment on each and every move, which could be a bit annoying, especially if only one move possible.

The Chess site linked above (not mine) looks quite interesting, they actually have a tournament where only the Kings Gambit can be used. Too frightening for me!

Picked up a book and it's all making more sense. Added people on the list to friends so give us a shout for a game I no longer get mated in 10 moves:p

Whats the point? Chess is the ultimate mental challenge. Anyone doing so is only losing out. Besides, if you play someone using a computer, you're only going to learn from it :).

Will give it a go!
