**Official Portal 2 thread**

this is waht frustrates me thousands of people buy the pre-load then pirates have to illegally download via torrent whilst most of us spend hours on servers trying to get potatoes to unlock portal 2 early

To be honest until there is a Steam powered console it will be hard to control distribution on gaming console platforms. I'd be more annoyed if I got it on 360 as they're getting screwed over (no steam integration)

How do you do it? Want to make my friends QQ! :P

Go to steam/steamapps/common.

Pick any game that appears there such as l4d or audiosurf.

Somewhere in the game's folder there will be a text file called steam_appid, it may not be in the main directory.

Open this in notepad and replace the number with 620.

Start that game from the .exe, not steam.

Notepad troll deluxe. :p

Idiot, he is going to be in deep **** since he is the only guy out of thousands playing the game. he will just pop-up on the statistics.

Apart from if he's actually playing a legit PS3 version he's done nothing wrong...

A new working theory is when we hit 375,466 potatoes the multiplier effect from the potatoes will kick in. Giving us a substantial boost hopefully, only 11k potatoes left to see if this is true :) get collecting potatoes!

What is that theory even based on  It just sounds like someone is talkng out there arse and seeing if people beieve them ><

I'm really gonna have to change the batteries in this keyboard before Portal 2...

Surely the potato multiplier has been active all along? There was 100,000 odd at the start which is a 1x multiplier and therefore has no effect but it should be working at 3x now.

Well we were told that the multiplier activates when a certain potato milestone is reached and

"rg2 chatroom user Willox indicates since 88 is the ascii code for 'X' then it might mean the Auxiliary Power will kick in at X 375,466"

Either way its only a theory so in about 10k potatoes we will see if its true or not :)

How anyone ever managed to make sense of this whole ARG thing, I shall never know. My brain is combusting just contemplating the whole thing.

They did a similar thing for the release of Portal 1, mixing the game story with reality using clues at real locations, dummy websites and all kinds of cool tricks.

You do realise that buying the sack to participate actually fudges the effort right?
The games are measured by their sales volume, so anyone who buys the sack to contribute is actually just adding an extra workload to the cause, they would have to complete their own quota just to break even again.

If you don't want to participate, you don't have to. You still get it released early, no-one misses out.

Meanwhile there are a lot of people having fun playing the ARG and anticipating what is highly likely to be the game of the year. The fact that we don't know exactly when it will be released, only that it will be sometime in the next 48 hours, just adds to the excitement for me.

This tbh. Bonus free content for games? Yeah, completely of no benefit to the consumer.

Some people just like an excuse to whine about f-all I guess.

I'm not massively contributing - I don't have the potato sack, the only games I have off the list are KF and DGTA.

So i've gotten the potato from joining the Steam group and i've left one or the other of those games open overnight (dunno if that works but what the hell).
