Official SSD upgrade

I am thinking of upgrading my 2011 27" Imac HD from the 1TB standard disk to an SSD drive. Part of the reason for doing this is to basically get cheap shipping (from Oregon to Virginia) and I also hope to get a bit of a performance boost.

Spoke to a guy at the local mac store who said one issue is that the computer expects a certain cable with a temperature readout of the rive and SSD might not have that. Not sure if that is true?

Thing is he didn't know about prices and I am struggling to find any information online. If it is going to cost a fortune I will try to ship myself but this is proving difficult getting a correct box and a shipper who will properly insure an imac not in the original box.

Any clues on the (US or UK) costs to get you imac HD upgraded?

I've a 2010 27" iMac and my 1tb drive failed yesterday :(

There's a warranty replacement on some 1tb drives but mine is outside the 3 year window, doh.

Apple store quoted approx £200 for a replacement so I've been looking at DIY solutions, there's quite a few guides and videos about, quite a tricky process mind.

There's a fan control app to get around the temp sensor issue apparently...

I would do it myself but one of the reasons I will go through Apple is they will ship and box the Mac for free or cheap.

I'm moving form Oregon to Virginia and need to take the max with me. I've been quoted $60 from Apple for a replacement box (), shipping will cost me about $50 on top. If i send the computer to Apple then I just drop it off at the local Mac store, they will ship it to Apple who will add the SSD and ship it on to my Virginian address, either for free or $50 tops.

If I get the hardware upgrade then my employer will pay for everything. If I ship myself then I pay for shipping.

Basically, there is a temp sensor of sorts in the built in 1TB drive. Hence if you replace it, the fans go mad.

But there is an additional port on the motherboard, allowing a 2nd sata connection, I did this so now have 2 HDD's in my iMac :)

@Phate, I've still to get round to installing my SSD internally as I started a thread late last year and you gave me some info on doing this.
The thread is now deleted, but I can't remember if you said when you installed your SSD internally that you disconnected your HDD?
I've got the said sata cable required etc, but at the moment using my SSD via Thunderbolt cable/sled.
