Any rumours or thoughts on 2.5GbE port switches and gateways making an appearance that aren't a fortune? I know there was a UDR Ultra rumoured for a while

There are always folks who basically make stuff up. And there are genuine leaks from the Alpha Plus group. From what I understand Alpha Plus get lots of hand-built 100-off prototype gear to test. So they might decide to build a UDR-Ultra prototype and it gets sent out to 100 users and they say ‘yeah’ or ‘nah’ but they they have to make it and market it so even the stuff that gets a thumbs-up may never actually get sold and I would imagine all the Alpha Plus equipment gets collected and destroyed as a tax requirement.

In about 2017 Chris Buechler (definitely Alpha Plus) posted a picture of his rack and it was full of stuff that never launched.

Do you recall the black “UDM-Pro”? That was an original black UDM engineering sample picture coupled with the specs of the upcoming UDM-Pro SE. Specs were correct, just not in that box.

Cheaper 2.5GbE stuff will doubtless be coming and switches are probably the least important bit of UniFi anyway so just get TP-link or something instead.

I thought everything was running better recently :)

He was brought in as the savior of the routing/switching division and he was supposed to be Mr pfSense etc. but I’m not sure what he actually did except introduce IPS/IDS which just upsets and annoys users to this very day.

TBH not bothered in the slightest where he goes or doesn't go.

I get that. If you’ve ever read any of my other posts about him, I do not consider him to have made a positive contribution and I’m really starting to get behind Alta Labs as the natural successor product in the UniFi space so if he ended up there leading their router project, I would be properly grief-stricken.

[Edit]He’s still showing on LinkedIn as Principal Network Engineer at UBNT and we have a connection in common - Dallin Kaufmann - the CTO at Alta Labs!!!

But that not surprising as Dallin Kaufmann used to work at UBNT[/Edit].

Ah ok, he’s not made a good impact previously then..

Any preferred recommendations for set up or tweaking guides for Unifi networks? I've been putting off sorting out the new network for weeks and might try and rectify this weekend. Have come across Mactelecom Networks, Crosstalk Solutions and Unified IT on YouTube but there's so much content, takes a while to review. I need to sort out setting up separate VLANs for the CCTV (and any other additional steps for better security), PPSK, channel and power tweaking and a guest network.

I like the Crosstalk videos, I would just say do one thing at a time. Do the VLANs first and then set up PPSK.

I'm starting to consider a home network upgrade. Currently run a aging asus router, and OpenVPN is no longer supported properly.
My setup is a combo of 2 Asus routers, one in AP mode, a 16 port unmanaged switch with a lot of the IoT controllers attached + handling half a dozen wired connections around the house, and a 4 port 2.5G switch handling the connection between main PC and Server. Another small switch in the lounge for various AV wired connections.
Thinking in replacing Asus router and AP with Dream Machine, a few switches. Dream machine seems to be worth the extra £50 on top of the Express?
Also is there any magic in their cheaper switches that warrants replacing my existing cheap unmanaged boxes?

When you say Dream Machine, are you referring to Dream Router? (Not the rack mounted one).

I was waiting for one but, they are sold out and strong rumours the replacement is going to be in the ultra line and may not act as an AP. Someone more knowledgeable probably has more details than me.

You went get the single pane of glass management for your switches if you use a UniFi gateway. The UniFi switches allow you to port channel, assign VLANs etc. But apart from that, they're not that clever at all. Depends what you want to do with them. If it's for the TV, PlayStation etc all on a flat network with no VLAN requirements, you don't need UniFi switches for that.

Yes I did, sorry I forgot their rackmount stuff was called the same.

Oh interesting about the replacement, is this why they are hard to find?
