** Official WoW Catalysm Alpha/Beta Thread **

It should just be downloading the installer atm, but no it doesn't matter since the alpha client will basically copy across files from your live install and then install the extra alpha stuff to make a 2nd stand alone install of WoW on your computer.

Nope it's a completely different install, the alpha will install into a folder called World of Warcraft Beta and take up around the same amount of disk space as your current live install.

Personally wouldn't install it (or any game really) into program files if you're on vista or win7.
Saves so much UAC and folder redirection hassle when games (especially ones like wow that store settings inside the main folder) are in their own little unprotected folder.

I'm innnnnnnn whoooop!! :D

but just so you don't feel bad I'll give you something alll to laugh at me about. My account was hacked last week and only just got access back. Now whoever hacked me has been using bots as i have been perma banned :p

5 minutes after being perma banned I got access to alpha testing lol. Contacted support and sure it will be sorted but lulz at my misfortune:D

I can't say i've ever had any problems installing a game to Program Files, and i've been doing it since the days of Windows 95.

What games cause problems?

On Vista/Windows 7 any game that saves config info in its own directory e.g WoW with its WTF folder will end up having its data redirected to C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\VirtualStore instead of in the program files folder. This can cause issues with settings seemingly not sticking, when you delete the WTF folder from program files to perhaps fix an issue since it's not actually loading your settings from there it doesn't do anything.

For games like WoW it's really best to save it in a folder outside Program Files.
