** Official WoW Catalysm Alpha/Beta Thread **

Folks, there are plenty of patch mirrors here, just paste it into the correct folder (Updates) and then you wont need to download it via the downloader, which is awful and slow most of the time.

Remember to CRC check them. Once downloaded a patch listed on patch mirrors and it contained a nasty but useless malware (its named similarly to the serviced used for MSE) in it.

Looks like red shirt guy will be in the game :)

just wondering if you were to start a whole new character, which class has undergone the most changes for the better? Im quite new to the game, just been reading that if you dont know what to be choose one of the 'hybrids' like a druid, shaman, paladin etc

Im confused, i only played the game once and got my warrior to level 20, but now im trying to play again but want something different.

I've been playing WoW on and off for years now. My main character is a Warlock, which is a pure damage/debuff class. If there's one thing I regret it's not choosing a hybrid class from the start. I so often wish I could try some tanking or healing but because I'm quite a casual player I don't have the time to level another character to 80.

So if I was starting the game now I would go with a hybrid without question. I chose a Lock all those years ago as I thought they would be one of the primary damage dealers, by a margin. But there's not really any benefit to being a pure class in any role now. You can talk numbers all you want, about which class is best at certain roles. The fact is there's so little in it now that it's really all down to the player. Having the choice to play 2 or 3 of the roles with the same character means so much more. Go for a Druid, Paladin or Shaman and it's all you'll need.

ROFL... thats quality ^^ hope they give him the same monotonous drone like voice

Ha!

REgarding my decision, it's going to be druid i level first in cata, mainly for gathering proffs, now to farm about 20k honour points to kit myself out a decent feral set for levelling.

thanks very helpful post, are they all fairly similar? Atm i think im gonna go with a paladin.

There is a fair bit of difference between the three mentioned. All three have melee specs with different resources (druid = energy, paladin= mana+ holy power, shaman = mana), healing styles vary form HoT based druids to direct healing of paladins. If you chose between the three as a first character then paladin is a decent choice, gives you an option to play three roles which are pretty good in cataclysm.

Red shirt guy addition was funny, but its sad to say that his question, or rather check was actually a very good one compared to all the other rubbish questions thrown during blizzcon... like "can we get a lvl 85 atiesh".

When the playerbase of a game is little more than socially inept pixelated crack addicts I guess thats what they expect!

Its a lot more than that, I assure you.

Perhaps the same can't be said for the people who actually attended Blizzcon though :p

Waste of time grinding a levelling set now, assuming all the claims are true you will be replacing most if not all of it by lvl82ish.

On the subject of hybrids (druid, paladin, shaman at least) if you are looking for a class that can easily respec to a completely different role/play style the druid is probably the best option since its the only class that can actually perform all 4 roles in the game (tank, melee dps, ranged dps, healer) and it plays fairly differently in each spec.

cheers for all the advice guys, is there a server that a lot of ocuk members play on or anything? I only know one guy who plays it, havent a clue what server hes on.

I play on Quel'thalas which has a decent mix of UK and other Euros. I've been thinking about moving to another server though as I've found it hard to find a decent casual guild and just most of the people on my server seem to be ********* or annoying kids. But I guess any server you try will have its fair share of idiots.

Going back to the hybrid discussion, i'll be rerolling for Cata with the intention of replacing my Lock with a new main. Just can't decide what to go with. I'm definitely going for a Worgen as I think they look pretty cool. But can't decide on a Druid or Warrior. I've always liked the idea of a warrior and think they suit me and my play style quite well, plus they seem to be doing very well in dps and fairly well in tanking atm. But Druid is also tempting just because of the choice of being able to do anything, plus I want to try healing at some point.

Originally I was gonna try a Rogue but I think every man and his alt will be rolling a Worgen Rogue. Plus they're a bit one dimensional for me and seem to have been stung a bit by the recent updates too.

Yup you pretty much replace all your gear (unless your in heroic 277+284) in the first few levels.

Regarding the server, again it kinda depends on what your looking for, PVP, PVE, or even RP realms.

People might find this interesting, no preordered online? Want to precache all the data for next month follow this:

NOTE: Blizzard has approved use of this method. It is not against the ToS, EULA, or any other acronym.

Pre-orders for the Cataclysm digital upgrade are officially open, and you can start downloading the remainder of the expansion's data the moment your purchase goes through. But what if you're awaiting a Collector's Edition or you don't have the money to upgrade online right now? You don't want to be left waiting for Cataclysm to download and install on launch night.

Thankfully, we've got you covered. There's an easy way to preload all the data you'll need to play Cataclysm the moment it goes live on midnight Dec. 7. Just follow these easy steps:

1. Make sure World of Warcraft and/or the launcher and background downloader are completely closed.
2. Open up your World of Warcraft folder.
3. Open Launcher.wtf in Notepad and change the "accountType" line from LK to CT.
4. Open Config.wtf in Notepad and change the "accountType" line from LK to CT.

Now load up the launcher and you should begin downloading 700 megs or so of new material. That's the last bit of data you need to play on launch night. Enjoy!

Remember: This will only give you the necessary files to play Cataclysm. It will not upgrade your account and you will not be able to access Cataclysm features. You still need to buy the game if you want to play on launch day.

Works perfectly btw

My main is a Druid, Resto mainly and Teddy off-spec. I love the flexibility of the hybrid classes, especially as a very casual player as it took me ages to hit 80. I've just reached 80 with my Paladin Tank, it only took a year and a half :)

I'm part of a small, tight-knit, casual 10 man raiding group, Alliance on Sylvanas (EU). We try to organise two official raids a week and have recently started ICC hard modes.
Pretty much all of us have families and real life commitments so we play very flexibly and casual. I think I'm one of the youngest at 30! Casual, family orientated guilds can be hard to find in this game

wow, that's long time to reach lvl 80. I don't have the patient to do something like that.

I have not touch wow for 2 years now.

Sweet, I can confirm it works, Downloading at 430kb/s right now, only takes like 30seconds to change the WTF files too.

Decided in this next month I'm going to level a horde DK, but what race?! My main is a belf warlock, so would like it to change. Only thing that puts me off troll/tauren is the lack of shoes, but I'm still stuck between undead, orc, tauren and troll D:

In the middle of installing this game (20hrs yay) im gonna make a human paladin. Ive had this game for about 3 years and never got past making it to level 22. This time im gonna stick to it (of course in moderation) and try and get to see most of the world before its changed forever.
Anway all i want to know really is what server should i go, should it be a old server with say medium to high pop or should i go on a low pop server?
