My iPhone 3GS 16gb is locked to 02 but i got it unlocked so i could use it with my Orange contract. I bought it 2nd hand.

Could I just buy a O2 PAYG SIM, top it up £15 and then get it unlocked from O2 officially and use it with my Orange contract SIM (like im doing)???

Yes..... after you've owned the O2 phone for x number of months.

I believe it's 12.

EDIT: I misread, no.. you'd have to buy the phone with the SIM you want to be unlocked.

So, i cant request an unlock from O2 even though the iphone is on O2 and nearly a year old if i stick an O2 PAYG sim...?

I'm pretty sure you can just get it unlocked now without minimum terms, to do with the fact that 02 no longer have exclusivity or something?

Give 02 a call.

Your OP is confusing.

You had the phone unlocked, but now you want O2 to unlock it? I suspect you mean it was jailbroken before and now need it unlocked legitimately?

As long as you've had the phone with an active contract for 12+ months then you can get them to unlock it. As for getting a PAYG SIM.. I'm sure there's a minimum term but you'd still need to pay the £15.

As Kylew said.. call O2.

Urrrm..... AT&T don't operate in the UK. They never had exclsivity of providing iPhones here.

No way!! So it's finally official then, AT&T no longer own exclusivity of providing iPhones. Not only that but you can get them unlocked... fantastic.

Still though, I'd be surprised if O2 would unlock your phone just becuase you bought an O2 PAYG card. Surely you'd need to have had purchased the iPhone from O2 under a contract.

No, I can get mine unlocked for £15 (though it's actually unlocked already, but not "officially unlocked" if you get what I mean.) and I bought mine as a PAYG handset.

I'd get it done, but it's £15 for something I've currently got for free.

well i've ordered a free PAYG sim from 02. going to top it up £15 and request an unlock....

PS. My phone is not officially unlocked if you get my drift. But i want to get it officially unlocked so restoring it in itunes is a lot easier!

 never had any problems doing it myself using 3rd party software/ restoring using itunes

Means I don't have to bother with unlocking software. And if it ever goes wrong i can just insert any sim and dont have to worry about relying on 3rd party software to make it work

I know what you mean, but if your careful and read around before updating your phone then there is no need for an official unlock tbh..

Ye but tahts what i kind of hate. Just want to be able to plug phone in, install latest software and off i go.

I've kind of sorted the problem. Bought a 2nd hand one on Orange so wount need to software unlock it.
