Hey Guys,

I'm looking for a backup solution that will replicate a large SBS 2011 Server offsite to another server if possible? Customer wants the ability to swap out the server in the even it dies or fire etc.. Idea being a fast swap out. Customer has fibre to fibre VPN at the moment.

I've been looking at backup exec, but wanted to know if anyone has any other suggestions?

Note: Customer does not want to move to cloud! Already asked ;)

Thanks

You're asking for backup but it appears you actually want failover. Which one is it? Does it have to come up automatically when the primary fails, does it have to sync in real time or can you lose a couple of hours?

What sort of bandwidth do you have available? What's your budget?

the questions above are very valid.
i have somehting in mind that would work but im not sure that you can add another domain controler to an SBS.. i know in the old days if it saw another SBS 1 would shut down.

Some thoughts:

- consider using Acronis or Storagecraft to make backups that will allow you to restore to dissimilar hardware (they both have SBS "aware" products) - kind of a cold spare scenario. This might go someway towards what you want to do.

Otherwise, do the following and a cold spare might not be necessary (I have 5 SBS clients and none have a cold spare. I use the below system):

- use reputable hardware backed up with a 4hr warranty
- use the SBS back up to at least 2 rotated usb disks (always keep one offsite)
- consider some sort of mail hygiene service that will spool mail if SBS/internet is down
- use a UPS
