Wifes car needs a fanbelt. So i nip off to the local motor factor in my SJ, on the way it developes a SERIOUS fuel problem, bunnyhopping and stalling. It wouldn't rev out and it was only the momentum i gained on a downward hill that kept it from stalling. Until i reach the bottom and it flattened off, when it died.

It would start for a few second, then die. If i touch the gas, it dies instantly, it ticked over for about 10 seconds if i leave the choke out then dies.

I bussed it to the motor factor and picked up a few screwdrivers and a can of carb cleaner (took ALL my tools out a few days ago to help a mate move a telly, duh)

Popped the top off the float chamber and it was nearly empty, so i turned the engine over and pumped fuel directly into the chamber. It started for a few seconds again but still died, without the level of the fuel going fown.

Which says blocked jet to me. So i dump a load of carb cleaner into the area to dislodge anything big and try the "rev it hard and block the air inlet" to pull anything through with a bit of vacuum. Which was tricky as the engine only really showed any life when i was cranking it over.

Things seemed to be going okay, it was spluttering a bit which hopefully meant things were clearing out.

And then the smoke started to rise from the starter. Which now only goes "click click" when i turn the key. Also my dash lights now only come on when i'm cranking :?:

Of course it all comes at a time of the year when we've got as lot of spare cash too. Think i'm going to be driving the van for a while :(

^^^ that was yesterday.

Hmm, so much for my hopes of finding some dead bushes :(

£65 exchange from the local autoelectrics place. Bah humbug!

And then i've still got to sort the fueling problem!

Sounds similar to my old Hyundai. The aluminium of the carb had started corroding (probably due to the 18 months it was laid up) and it deposited little flakes to the jets :( Ended up getting a new carb as I would clear it then as more corrosion made its way to the jet it would be playing up again within days.

Woot, local guy (tiverton, only an hour away) has starter i can have for pennies.

So i left the wife to deal with 2 xmas excited sprogs and went for a drive.

Nice little blast in the wifes car (which doesn't squeal like a prision bitch anymore!), way fun on the way back from the guys place. It dumped the injector line leakoff bung and dumped half a tank of diesel all over the engine. Of course i didn't know this was the cause until i got home, i just though i was getting REALLY bad fuel economy (it's a 1.7td astra with a GM motor, needs a couple of miles run up to get any speed out it so i drive foot to the floor everywhere). Until i stopped the engine and the smoke started to rise from under the bonnet. Front of the car is black, black streaks up the bonnet from where all the road crap has stuck to the oil.

She's really impressed with me. Umm

Right, starter is in, it's a larger unit than my old one so i needed a bit of BFH work to push one of the engine mounts a couple of mm out of the way.

It turns over. But doesn't start :(

I've pulled the jets out of the carb, squirted a load of cleaner type spray down the holes, let it soak for a bit, then blasted everything with the airline (i drained the float first, not THAT stupid), nothing out of the ordinary popped out. So i buttoned it all back together and tried again, this time with the airbox off (was removed when i put the starter in), it spluttered, started for a few seconds, then died again. And this time i had fuel running out of the carb inlet  wtf? Not a torrent, but a good 1-2cc, it might have been doing this before, but i wouldn't have seen it.

Running out of ideas and i'm getting bored of losing the feeling in my fingertips working outside.

Any ideas (or what blatently obvious things have i missed?)

Cheers

Quick snap with the phone, red arrow is where the fuel floods out of. :(

When i put the airline to that hole it blows back into this chamber.

Not had this one apart before, don't even know what manufacturer it is

I assume suzuk sj410 one of those pre-vitara type 4x4's they did.

Yup, 40bhp of fury at the wheels :D (when it was new, must still be a couple of dozen now :p)

Carb is an Aisin unit.

After doing lots of hunting around, i've found the condensor could have died too, there's a second cable spurred off a connection and it's been shorting aginst the bodywork.

Was meant to be going to a Pay & Play tomorrow too, bum :(

Wasn't the condensor :(

Fired up and died the same as before. Carb came off again, planning on taking it completely to pieces this time.

Tried taking the choke flap off, first screw was fine, second screw snapped, meaning i can't take the choke mech off. :(

It get's better. Taking the main jet out, some bugger has chewed the crap out of the retaining screw and now it doesn't go in or out and i can't reassemble the bleedin thing

Need to drill it out and find another pin, this is going to be fun. Or i can get another carb (as long as it's not an SU, seen nothing but trouble with them!)

Off to sulk now.
