With so many quality Intel chips out now, it is bad for average noob to decide which route to go, but to help us out just a little abit, at least keep name/number of them simple so we can easily gather which is fastest.

You know something like I7 820,850,870,920,950

One knows from past history, higher the number, better the cpu.

Now some brain box at Intel decides to change that and has a I7 core 8xx better than a 9xx.

I mean seriously, why do they have to make things harder than it is. :rolleyes:

I could not believe it, i thought all the I7 8xx was just a cheaper and more value offer to average user over I7 9**. Yet you look at some of suppose prices, some of the 8xx are priced twice as much as I7 920 :eek:

For fellow fools like me. Can't they slap a big ass sticker on them, saying this is for gaming, this is for surfing the net for pron, this is for film making, this is for etc....

It is simple it's just that you seem to be under the illusion that i7 8xx is better than i7 9xx.

i7 is better than i5.
9xx is better than 8xx.

etc.

Not saying i7 8xx will be considerably slower than i7 9xx but certainly it's not as technologically advanced so I don't know where you're seeing twice as expensive.

i guess a higher i5 8xx, could be better than a lower i7 9xx, obviously we only know of 1 i5, and 2 new i7 1156 sockets. so anything could happen in 3-6 months time.

i7 860 is combarable to i7920 in price and performance (its a ittle faster in most things as its clocked higher) Similarly i7 870 is comparable to i7950. If you're an overclocker the 8 series chips look like they are easier to clock and run cooler.

Benchmarks put the 8** series above the 920, at stock at least.

Yes but like with Phenom II it's only because they're clocked faster at stock, if you're overclocking then you'll want i7 9xx for the very best performance unless i7 8xx turn out to be insane clockers.

Well since they're basically the same chip but have a lower heat output i would be surprised if they weren't at least as good as the 920. And generally P*5 chipsets are better than X*8s.

How come these new chips are only setup for dual channel DDR3 rather than triple channel DDR3? As if it is not using 3 channels then it is just DDR2?

Because four cores aren't enough to stress two channels of DDR3. Triple channel DDR3 will come into its own with the 6-core CPUs next year, it's been overkill for everything so far.

No, that number doesn't refer to the number of channels.

i5 + i7 8## = P55
i7 9## = X58

the i7 8##'s are only beating the i7 9##'s when they have the higher clock speed and in mainstream tasks.
