Okie Dokie.

Short and sweet...Vista wont boot properly.

Everything works fine up until the point where the login screen is supposed to appear.
The booting progress bar just hangs for about 5 mins with no hdd activity and then i just get a blank screen if I'm lucky.

Everything was working fine until I tried shrinking my main partition so that I had a separate place for all my documents in case of eventualities such as this!

All I need to be able to do is recover my files so I can wipe the drive. Please can someone help me?

Very many thanks,

You have a few choices in the file recovery dilemma. You could put that drive into another pc and copy the files off if possible (and if bitlocker isn't used)

You could boot into a live linux cd and copy the files onto some removeable storage.

If you have another spare HDD hanging around, install windows to that and then copy the files off.

It all depends what you have handy

Should have mentioned that this was on a laptop lol so doing stuff with hdd's is out really.

As per your recomendation I'm currently downloading the Kubuntu live cd to attempt extraction of files.

Buy a little laptop HDD converter. Possibly one of the handiest pieces of kit I have.

Good luck

Much fiddling with a slow as heck Kubuntu live cd later and I'm now copying my laptop files to my desktop over network.

All hail linux. :D
