I mean jees, its not like i dont know computers, its not like im dumb, im not even drunk! But whatever i do if i assign myself a static IP my internet con goes down, in so far as my statically IP'd comp will no longer connect to the internet. I've manually assigned DNS ive tried making ithe central router IP the gateway, i've tried making my AP the gateway ive tried every setting i can find on either AP or router and NOTHING lets me keep a static IP while maintaining connection.

HELP!!

This has been doing my nut for months!

What's the dynamic IP address you're getting and what static one are you trying to assign?

Dynamic IP at Start > Run > cmd > ipconfig BTW :)

my IP is 192.168.11.4 My AP is set to 192.168.11.10 (reserved manually by router) and the router IP is 192.168.11.1

Im trying to set it to 192.168.11.19 or similar to keep it distanced from other clients on the network

For starters, it's the router's IP you're wanting to use as gateway.

What do you get with a tracert to either bbc.net.uk or 212.58.224.82 (they're the same thing), with the manual settings?

So you get nothing when you ping that IP then? Also, what happens if you statically assign your machine the IP you would be getting on DHCP? So basically give you machine the static address of 192.168.11.4 :)

What IP address are you setting as the default gateway when you try this? Like Tolien said, you should be using the router, so entering 192.168.11.1.

well this brings me onto another Q then, since your all bringing me good luck tonight, my computer is connected as shown but i have my MCE PC connected over gigabit ethernet cable (crossover) however most of the time this con doesnt work (only seems to work if i stick it in a network bridge with my unused wless con (i have 2) stupid huh, how should i go about setting it up to work more ahem regularily (bearing in mind its now PC-PC-wlessAP-Router-net)

So you're connecting the MCE PC to your PC via cable, the your PC via wireless USB adapter to the router right?

indeedy, have PC with a wireless adapter, now, thank you all, with a static IP. I have an MCE PC hooked up to it via gigabit e/cards and cat5 crossover. Unless i add it to a bridge i get the old 'limited or no connectivity' i would like to assign static IP's here too.

Thanks for any help

"Limited or no connectivity" just means it didn't get an answer from a DHCP server - and you're going to have to bridge it with something (though the normal would've been the wireless device you're using and the network card).
