Long Good Friday gets US remake

A remake of the classic British crime film The Long Good Friday is being planned, it has been confirmed.

The 1980 original starred Bob Hoskins as an East End gangster whose criminal empire comes under attack from a wave of mysterious bombings. Production company Handmade Films said the story would be "refreshed" with a modern setting. Filming is due to start in Miami in 2008 under the direction of Paul W S Anderson, who made Resident Evil. Handmade chairman Patrick Meehan said: "The original was a highly praised classic and one of Handmade's most prized films, but its reach was limited primarily to the UK. "Following continued interest from the US, we realised this remake could attract audiences worldwide with an updated setting and contemporary overtones. "When Paul presented his creative vision for this project, we were instantly convinced that this is a story that could be successfully refreshed, yet leave the integrity of the original intact." Anderson added: "I am delighted to have the opportunity to put a new spin on this classic film which promises to reveal today's gritty underworld in an equally shocking fashion." No actors have so far been confirmed for the project.

First The Italian Job, now this. And to make matters worse, Paul Anderson?

I'm going before I say something bannable

Just exactly what was wrong with the original? Why is there any need to remake good films, the chances of improving them are slim to none, in fact the only remake I can think of off the top of my head that improves on the original is Gone In 60 Seconds and even that might be debateable.

I do hate Hollywood sometimes. Why spoil the best british gangster film of all time by having this pile of excrement tarnish it's history.

That's ridiculous, can't they produce any original material, things can't be that bad.

Saw the Hitcher remake a couple of weeks ago and a pretty feeble effort it was as well, not a patch on the superb original.

thats just it they have run out of material for films themselfs so they look back at all the classics i would not be suprised if they did remakes of godfather trilogy soon :(

Hollywood is infected with nepotism and generational fiscal-greed film-makers empty of passion and origionality.

Sadly, those passionate about the art of making film very rarely find a way into the impenetrable industry. Thus, the mass production Hollywood factory churns out an unremitting chain of crap year by year.
