So I finally got around to getting myself an RJ45 crimping tool today and all I can say is "D'oh! Stubby fingers!!!".

Never thought it would be quite so fiddly, any tips from you hardened crimpers? :D

hmm what kinda crimp tool have you got - mines like an oversized pair of pliers and you'd need stupidly poddgy fingers to find it a problem.

Just takes some practise :/ once you get the hang of organising the cables so theyre flat and even its easy enough.

Yeh, it's getting the wires organised that I'm having problems with, the tool itself is just fine.

I got my crimp tool ages ago and it works perfectly :D They're damn pricey now though!

From experience I can say the actual cables itself makes a lot of difference, although unfortunately it's hard to say which is good until you're using it :(

It just takes practise, after three or four cables you will be flying along.

I normally slide a head on before I organise the cables just to check the lengh and it helps straighten them out flat I find.

This is my process:

Strip ~1 inch of sheathing.
Untwist the pairs
Pull/run closed fingers up the individual cables to remove bends and kinks.
Organise the cables as required
Push them neatly next to each other by holding them flat between thumb and forefinger
Use snips to cut FLAT across the cables at the correct length. Its easy to cut at an angle!
Push into RJ45 end
Make sure order is kept, push in Hard.
*Crimp*
Done!

strip off about 2 inches of the coating, sort the wires, so they're in the right order and flat, then trim end and and crimp it

less fiddly :)

You know I don't think I have ever crimped an RJ45 and it not work. For some reason I find it quite easy although have not done it that much. I guess we must have the good tools here as they do weigh quite a bit and seem pretty sturdy. Our tools guy only buys good stuff as is quite 4nal about tools.

To be honest crimp tools are god awfully simple devices.

Even a cheap as chips one will do the job, how long it will last is a different kettle of fish though :p

give plenty of exposed wire and pull along each strand so it's nice and straight. Then they're easy to order, stuff them in as a group slowly and they'll sort themselves out. quick check the order is correct and crimp.

Depending on how many you're doing it's usually more economical to buy pre made fly leads.

Ok, so that's where I've been going wrong. I was using the stripping bit on the crimp tool to expose the inner wires and that was only leaving the amount needed to go into the plug, I'll strip more off and trim them short once I have them flattened and lined up.

Thanks all :)
