Oh hell what have I done?

New PC that I built a couple months ago, i7 920, Asus P6T Deluxe, fx nivida graphics card. Been perfect.

Just switched it off to add an extra fan and second hard drive that came today.... simply plugged them in, all nice and simple. Press power button and there is a small spark of light near motherboard followed by electrical crack sound.

Now nothing is powering up. What the hell have I done? It was only a hard drive and a fan. Nothing is overclocked or messed with in any other way. Motherboard is still getting power it seems, reset and power led glowing away.

Please help, heart is racing a mile a minute right now...

Oh, and the little flash of light was also near a different fan that has blue leds, and since I wasn't looking directly at it, I'm not entirely sure it wasn't the fan lighting up for a second before it powered off. :-(

It was like a fuse blew in the PC. :-(

Remove everything non essential and just try to get the board to post. No need for loads of fans etc. Maybe take it out of the case too if there's something shorting it

I've took off the new bits I added but it is just not even trying to boot up.:(
(paces back and forth)

HOLY HELL IT LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only extra thing I just yanked was my storage drive that has all my video and 3D animations on. I turned off the psu from its switch till I saw the motherboard lights power down and turned it back on. terrified to do go near it now... it started up fine. Heart still palpitating though. What caused this....?

the psu is modular, I plugged in a new cable to the psu to power the new hdd. Could this have caused it? or static? Do I trust plugging in any of the new bits again?

I'd just plug it in again, try a different connection just in case the psu overloaded somehow. As long as everything fires up ok you can assume the main parts of the pc are ok.

Edit: as to what caused it, I'm not sure. Computers can be fickle things, just keep your fingers crossed!

(rocks back and forth) too scared... just thought I'd killed my i7, need chocolate. Maybe try adding the hdd again next week, once my heart rate is normal again.

rma the board just incase, you have at least a years warranty....if it was me i would return it and want another

If anything needs RMAing it sounds like the PSU is the most likely option. If plugging in a new HDD causes it to stop working it doesn't sound all that good. If it isn't essential then leave the hard drive out for a while, maybe try it on a different pc if you can just to see if it isn't damaged itself.
