Hello,
You might renember my old thread about an asus 8800GT:
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17819637
Bought it 2nd hand, had artifacting etcetc, managed to swap it @ retailer ( wich tested it as faulty) with a bit of extra payment for the new GTS as the GT's were out of stock.

Now there were some small issues with the 8800GTS:
1: I've concluded the card was overheating at stock settings and making my pc lock up, all games (Crysis, Dirt, UE3 games, TDU) locked up in an exact same way, just freezing the screen, my 2nd screen died a bit after, and at the first few moments on the freeze numlock etc still responded and soemtimes I could still manage to ctrl alt del, but it still froze after 30 secs completly.
2: Some games ( so far it's only been MP games of UT3 and HL2:DM doing this ) black screen immediatly after loadingm ap, screen stays black, have to reboot pc as pc freezes in the same way it does as in problem 1.

Now, so far I haven't had this problem since I started turning up my gpu fan @ 80% from boot, temps have halved ( from 88 load @ auto fan to 46 load @ 80% manual fan).

Till today and yesterday, I got a bsod (nv4disp.dll:() on the campaign map of m2tw, I've put back my stock settings of my cpu & mobo, tryed today, and it bsod'd at about the same place, if not at exact the same place ( after about the same ammount of time, when I was reading my campaign messages after doing 1 turn.).

Now I'm worried this card might be borked, I'm using 169.21 drivers, xp os, specs in sig but all on stock,.

What strikes me is that some games, like CoD4 have no issues at all, even on auto fan settings I've yet to crash CoD4 MP and I've played it for 30 hours hours now without a single issue, abotu 10 hours of those on auto fan settings. 2 D games seem fine too, been playing worms armageddon for hours and hours and no probs.

While I've yet to see problem 1 and 2 happen since I put my fan on 80% manually, this m2tw crash has got me completly worried.
Except for the instability, I've had problems with Texture shimmering in LFS and TDU, clamp causes LFS to have texture artifacts ( at some angles the ground textures dont perfectly link and you can see the borders of each texture) and still didn't eliminate the shimmering.
I've got a thread about it here: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17829645.

I'm becoming a bit desperate, how is Gigabytes RMA service ( precaution) and is there anything I can do about my problems, I'm pretty sick of this since I got into the 8-series I've had nothing but trouble, and this latest card has vague problems that often appear only after hours of playing or completly randomly ( problem 1 happened always at least after 15 mins of playing, in tdu it did it once after as much as 2 hours of playing ) and problem 2 didn't appear a 2nd time after a reboot on both hl2 dm and ut3.
Is this a borked card or can this be my config/ drivers/ other stuff.

So far I've only extensively tested this all in XP, I'll give Vista a go now for new games and see how it is with everything at stock. My psu is fine I've excluded that, lines are always 12.20 V or higher. Cpu is a possibility, although now it happened on stock I don't know, temps are very cool of my cpu anyways. Ram it ain't either, tryed with only 2gb wich I used to uve for a lot of months b4 and it was and problem 1 appeared anyways. But the problem is I'm unsure what is it is 100%, because I did a cpu upgrade, a ram upgrade and a gfx upgrade abotu all at the same time.

So in short all my questions:
Can it be a borked card ?
How is Gigabytes RMA service?
Can it be my OS or the drivers ?
What other can it be?
Why does it only happen in some games, while CoD4 has been fine in all situations for over 30 hours of gaming by now, including some big 3-4 hour games ?
Could the m2tw problem be in the game itself, it's v1.00 and it's a campaign I've been playing for ages?

Please reply, I'm really not happy with this :(

It might not be relevant as I only have a 7300GT, but I've had nothing but problems with the 169.21's BSODing with that exact same error no matter what I did. Perhaps use a beta driver or a slightly older driver.

nv4disp.dll is a well know driver error, been going since the 6 series, im suprised they aint fixed it yet, i used to get those errors with the old 9x.xx sets of drivers aroud a year ago, but never had any since i went to the 1xx.xx drivers, so i thought it would have been fixed by now, but obvioulsy not, you could try other drivers, im using the 169.17 beta's me as all sets after have broken profiles and what not, and thats including the WHQL ones. :)

I feel for you though, your not having much luck. :(

"the way its meant to be played" springs to mind here.

dude take it back.

Im not getting into this as it seems so obvious. if it cant run at stock whats the point.

Only doesn't in the right situations and games though, when I open my (rooms) window to cool my ambient temp, it's fine.
In games like CoD4, it's fine.

I'm afraid they're too stupid to test it properly, besides, I'm not even sure if it's the card as I've only been on 1 set of drivers, 1 OS, 1 pc.

Besides, I don't wana go through all the trouble pretending im the original buyer of the 8800GT ( retailer warranty only goes to him ) and I had to pretent I was the orginal buyer to be able to swap. So the 8800GTS is also on his name :(.

That leaves me with Gigabyte factory warranty, wich I'm unsure of how efficient and fast it is, hence I want the awnser how they are first.

Well known problem or not, my 6800GS used to be 100% stable on all drivers I've tryed on it except some modded drivers.

For me the profiles in the 169.21's whql DO seem to work.
At first they didnt but:
You have to switch the AA mode from ''improve app setting'' to ''override app setting'' wich makes forcing AA in profiles work.
You might need to have ntune to see the setting though.

the problem is with me I can't really try older drivers a they don't really support my card.

Can I request support from nvidia somehow?
How is Gigabytes RMA ?

Oh bugger it just realised, the 169.17's won't work on the GTS, i think the GTS's only have about 2x sets of drivers as they aint been out that long. :(

So, am I really the only one ever having a problem with a Gigabyte product? lol, nobody had a gigabyte rma going and can tell me how long it took ?

I read the other post... did you still have the same problem in COD4 ?

I had the same problem in crysis and cod4 too, mine is an 8800 ultra, I fixed by underclocking the ram... I have 4gigs, 1066mhz, I put it in 800mhz and problem fix for every game.... Dont know why its happen, maybe is a bad stick of ram or something but is the only way it seem to work....

I was having artifacts too, but in desktop and where small dots...

No problems with cod4 but thats coz I'm avoiding ue3 games pre playing cod4.
It's not my ram I'm sure ive tried running it even with just 2 gigs @ 533 mhz cas5 isnetad of 800 mhz cas4, doesn't help...

Why won't nvidia release new drivers dammit so I can see what it actually is?

The 38xx series isn't without problems.

Personally after owning both manufacturers cards, I personally get the impression that the Nvidia drivers are more resilient. The ati drivers seem to get corrupted very easily, and need uninstalling/reinstalling :( Nvidia's just seem to keep working.

That's just my experience of them upto 6800 series for nvidia and 38xx series for ati.

I'd just try and work round the problem as something is obviously wrong. Have you tried underclocking the memory on the card or underclocking the core on the card to reference settings (no stock o/c settings), or perhaps a little under? I'm not saying it's a solution, just that it may prove something is wrong with the card.

UE3 based game engines have problems with every driver BEFORE the beta 169.28 mate. Uninstall your graphics card via deivce manager (if your on vista) and choose to delete the devices software drivers as well. Do a fresh download of 169.28s from the nvidia webby and install those.

Playing 30 hours on COD4 would easily kill your card, as thats what killed my first 8800GT lol. Got massive artifacting after about 5 mins then on a reboot even bios would have the tell tail checkboard effect.

80% fan speed also seems the sweetspot of the cards but beware of going up in 5% increases as on my jetway 8800GT the fan starts and stops all the time instead of doing a proper fan cycle :S

Okay, I've just got the 169.28's, hope they fix it all.

Problem is I've got a BSOD earlier today again, this time playing Black&White 2.

Really odd:
M2TW = bsod
B&W2 = bsod

And then:
SC: FA = Fine
CoD4= fine
Crysis, UE3 games, etc= Fine provided 80% manually set fan speed
Sega rally revo= Fine so far.
C&C3= fine ( so far, the games I've played didn't last much more than 25 mins)

I'm still trying to work out if it's a borked card, a driver/hardware conflict, or some other software problem .

I've sent a request for support to gigabyte :

Hello,
I'm having a few problems with this card, but before I name these I can fully confirm the rest of my PC is 100% stable, I've tested it wiith prime 95 for 24 hours on the blend test for stability and noticed no problems. I've tried the latest Beta's and the latest WHQL for winxp ( 169.21's and 169.28's) and both have the same problems:

1: On automatic fan settings the fan slider doesn't move from 36%, making various games crash and/ or lock up due to probably overheating. Since I set my fan speed on 80% all lockups and crashes are gone. Temperature is 88 C under load when on auto settings and although this is still in it's safe limit it still crashes probably because of this, setting the fan speed on 80 % almost halves the temperature to 46C under load instead. It used to happen in a lot of games on auto settings. ( Test drive unlimited, Crysis, all unreal engine 3 games, Half life 2 : Deathmatch, and more.)
2: I'm getting BSOD's in games like Black& White 2 and Medieval 2: Total war. I have yet to fix this and want help with this. Bsod message is different often but is always caused by NV4_DISP.dll.
It happens usually after about 30 minutes of playing.

Card has always been running stock, I've been thinking about downclocking it to try to fix the bsod, but I'm afraid touching the clockspeeds will void my warranty... My psu is up to the match, it's SLi verified and has over 56 amps on the 12 V lines ( Akasa powerplus 550w). I have a PCIE 1.1 board wich should be compatible with pciex 2.0. I have properly wiped the old drivers with drivercleaner in safemode from my old 6800GS...

Are there any known problems with the drivers or is my card ready to me RMA'd ? I don't really care about the overheating to be honest , I can manage setting the fan speed on 80 % each time. But I do want a stable experience that allows me to play games like medieval 2 total war or black & white 2 normally without getting a BSOD.

XXXXX XXXXXXXX

Will see how they reply, tbh I haven't tested the 169.28's yet for BSOD's, but I generally want an awnser why I'm getting them with the WHQL ones, will be interesting if I get a serious reply.

Can anyone with an 8800GTS 512 on these forums confirm he has played Medieval 2 tw campaign and black and white 2 stable for at least a few hours ?

Your getting them with the WHQL ones because they are buggered drivers as well, the last set that worked for XP are the .17's (which unfortunately you can't use on the GTS as they don't support them), all sets after, beta and official WHQL'd are buggered.

You could try modding the .17's to work on the new GTS, theres a thread in the drivers section over at Guru that tells you how to modify drivers to support different cards.
