Hello,
You might renember my old thread about an asus 8800GT:
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17819637
Bought it 2nd hand, had artifacting etcetc, managed to swap it @ retailer ( wich tested it as faulty) with a bit of extra payment for the new GTS as the GT's were out of stock.
Now there were some small issues with the 8800GTS:
1: I've concluded the card was overheating at stock settings and making my pc lock up, all games (Crysis, Dirt, UE3 games, TDU) locked up in an exact same way, just freezing the screen, my 2nd screen died a bit after, and at the first few moments on the freeze numlock etc still responded and soemtimes I could still manage to ctrl alt del, but it still froze after 30 secs completly.
2: Some games ( so far it's only been MP games of UT3 and HL2
M doing this ) black screen immediatly after loadingm ap, screen stays black, have to reboot pc as pc freezes in the same way it does as in problem 1.
Now, so far I haven't had this problem since I started turning up my gpu fan @ 80% from boot, temps have halved ( from 88 load @ auto fan to 46 load @ 80% manual fan).
Till today and yesterday, I got a bsod (nv4disp.dll
) on the campaign map of m2tw, I've put back my stock settings of my cpu & mobo, tryed today, and it bsod'd at about the same place, if not at exact the same place ( after about the same ammount of time, when I was reading my campaign messages after doing 1 turn.).
Now I'm worried this card might be borked, I'm using 169.21 drivers, xp os, specs in sig but all on stock,.
What strikes me is that some games, like CoD4 have no issues at all, even on auto fan settings I've yet to crash CoD4 MP and I've played it for 30 hours hours now without a single issue, abotu 10 hours of those on auto fan settings. 2 D games seem fine too, been playing worms armageddon for hours and hours and no probs.
While I've yet to see problem 1 and 2 happen since I put my fan on 80% manually, this m2tw crash has got me completly worried.
Except for the instability, I've had problems with Texture shimmering in LFS and TDU, clamp causes LFS to have texture artifacts ( at some angles the ground textures dont perfectly link and you can see the borders of each texture) and still didn't eliminate the shimmering.
I've got a thread about it here: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17829645.
I'm becoming a bit desperate, how is Gigabytes RMA service ( precaution) and is there anything I can do about my problems, I'm pretty sick of this since I got into the 8-series I've had nothing but trouble, and this latest card has vague problems that often appear only after hours of playing or completly randomly ( problem 1 happened always at least after 15 mins of playing, in tdu it did it once after as much as 2 hours of playing ) and problem 2 didn't appear a 2nd time after a reboot on both hl2 dm and ut3.
Is this a borked card or can this be my config/ drivers/ other stuff.
So far I've only extensively tested this all in XP, I'll give Vista a go now for new games and see how it is with everything at stock. My psu is fine I've excluded that, lines are always 12.20 V or higher. Cpu is a possibility, although now it happened on stock I don't know, temps are very cool of my cpu anyways. Ram it ain't either, tryed with only 2gb wich I used to uve for a lot of months b4 and it was and problem 1 appeared anyways. But the problem is I'm unsure what is it is 100%, because I did a cpu upgrade, a ram upgrade and a gfx upgrade abotu all at the same time.
So in short all my questions:
Can it be a borked card ?
How is Gigabytes RMA service?
Can it be my OS or the drivers ?
What other can it be?
Why does it only happen in some games, while CoD4 has been fine in all situations for over 30 hours of gaming by now, including some big 3-4 hour games ?
Could the m2tw problem be in the game itself, it's v1.00 and it's a campaign I've been playing for ages?
Please reply, I'm really not happy with this
