In bed with your sister
I recently switched one of my quads over to the diskless folding distro and it has been happily Folding away at a slightly lower average ppd than before but using less power so I left it to it. It's been doing stuff like this and getting around 2000 ppd per client (running 2 clients) as opposed to around 2150 on WinSMP. It's a Q6600 G0, clocked to 3.5GHz.

Then it got one of these yesterday which, annoyingly, died at 83% :(

Then it got a P2653 - the same WU it was getting almost exclusively under WinSMP and doing 2100-2150 ppd.

Look what it does on the diskless client

That's it at 50% so it's not just a few freak frames. Here's the log.

For comparison, heres what the other two quads at similar clocks do on WinSMP with the same WU.

The cynic in me keeps expecting it to break as it doesn't seem right and I have to leave for Egypt about an hour before it's due to finish but I'll be keeping a close eye on it.
If it turns out to be a sweet WU for this rig, I hope it gets loads more.

Nice :) However haven't people been able to get 4000 or so with 2*2 ubuntu VM instances? 2000 seems a bit low in comparison...

To compare, I was getting about 2100 at stock on WinSMP yesterday, and that was whilst I was playing around i.e. I've not set it up correctly yet.

Nice :) However haven't people been able to get 4000 or so with 2*2 ubuntu VM instances? 2000 seems a bit low in comparison...

There are 2 clients on there, this is just one of them. The other one is currently giving about 2050 ppd bringing the total for both clients to around 5000 ppd.

Excellent :) Just what I wanted to hear, this is definitely how I'm going to set my machine up then :) Just waiting on a couple of cheap USB drives.

If one of the single crunchers with a quad is lucky they're going to get a nice red average production rather than the current maroon :)

Sounds about right. One of the lads in the official diskless thread says he can average upto 5800 ppd running a pair of clients on a Q6600 @ 3.6ghz.

I found my usb stick so I'm going to give this a go. I'm still wondering what my final setup is going to be software-wise on the new rig. Currently its Vista 32 with 2x Ubuntu VMs. Windows isn't activated yet so I'm not stuck with it. I'm leaning towards getting rid of Windows altogether since I noticed there is a version of VMWare that runs on Linux. It would also let me use the full 4GB (just bought another 2GB, not installed yet).

I tried both the disc and the usb pen and it kept coming up with an error - couldn't mount /hda1 or something after it downloads the fah core. Need to do some more reading I think.

When you point a browser to it that worked, so its running at least, just stalling at that point.

Yeah I got the same thing mate, not sure if that is actually a problem or not. I've posted in the official thread so I'll let you know :)

EDIT: Just did its first percent for the WU, slightly slower than the WinSMP client, but I am doing other things as well.
