I bought the Ultra as 8 weeks ago the GTX was quite old and I wanted fastest card available for new game in Sep-Nov, and we were then and probably now unsure of Nvidias full new launch.

I know you see many reviews and they vary so you need to read dozens and make your own decisions, but some here claim there is like 1-3FPS difference from a GTX, well IMO even 3FPS onto a games framerate can make it playable instead of laggy.

So I did bit of searching and it was scarce untill recently and most users should trust GURU 3D so I'm posting their review, you need skip to games benches pages if you dont want to read lot of info.

http://www.guru3d.com/article/Videocards/428/1/

Now them gains esp at higher RES are not 1-3FPS, in gaming terms I would class them as large gains.

I heard that the Ultra actually use a different core revision to the GTX cards, and that this makes them more overclockable, is this true?

Revision A3 or something? :)

Yes it is true, the only other card to use this core is the 8800GTS.

There's a lot of hate for the Ultra and indeed they were laughably overpriced when they were first released and worthy of such derision. Now you can pick them up for under £400 they are worth considering over a GTX.

On the Guru 3D results, I'm not convinced that showing averages of 100+ fps is very useful. I'd rather see the minimum frame rates. If there's a situation where the GTX can drop to 25fps yet the Ultra can maintain 30fps minimum, there's a definite sign that you're getting useful extra value.

BTW Anandtech are lamers, they even lied about the 6800's Purevideo back in the day, I aint visited since, I dont care what that site has to say, a gain of 10-40FPS in some them results is not a waste of time to me.

To reply with a quote from a lamer site and not post your own input is kind of a waste of time anyhow.

Yes Ultra's all have Rev3 cores all other 8800's until very recently did not, added to 0.8ns Memory they are fitted with, some hit 710mhz Core as above and 2500Mhz Memory, I wont know my cards true speeds as the damn mobo was a dud and blew up eventually lol.

Thats what Im trying to get at, some cant see that if they get 25FPS in some new FPS fadt moving games so it will be laggy and 30-35FPS could make it playable. :)

The only difference with a GTX is that it can clock to slightly higher levels, prolly due to a slightly higher voltage.

The difference between a stock GTX and Ultra is smaller than an overclocked GTX and Ultra because (in general) a GTX can overclock more than an Ultra, percentage wise.

But if you are happy with the card that's fine, but don't expect a lot of people agreeing with you, it's the same as saying a PS3 in great in the Console forum

Sure but its not about money for now with me or anyone agreeing, its about having the card thats going to get me more FPS in new games soon that we are told may be low FPS with our current gen cards (could be BS may run well), so I have a better chance with a Ultra than a GTX of getting 30+FPS. :)

Well none now as mobo blew, I'm on old PC once more, I have a 22" Mitsubishi Pro CRT so can run anywhere upto 2048x1536, and I could not play even Trackmania Extreme on my 46" 1080p TV with my 7900GTX as frames were 10-12FPS @1920x1080p60 and I felt ill.

I will try these new games at 1600x1200 or nearest 4:3 above that and see how FPS go and depends on my HZ at each res, I wont game bellow 85HZ ideally.

You know your going to get stick for buying 2x Ultra's lol :p

Edit seems 1920x1440 is nearest 4:3 to 1920x1080. :)

Well stop bragging how good it is, and get a new motherboard, and clock the nuts off it (shaders/clock/mem + volts). THEN we'd be impressed :D (As you went all out on a brand new card).

Matthew

Not bragging just fed up with haters, my complete rig all NEW parts minis case and HDD's and X-FI Fatal1ty is back at the store here, all parts that were in it when it went on fire need serious testing, the HDD's X-FI can be used in my old rig so there ok.

Seems Asus Crosshairs are bad for this, you take a gamble getting a good one. :(

I would go for the Ultra then if you are at that res. If they run fine you can crank up the res. :)

Dont worry about me and my Ultras. I will have 3 when these two come. Going to put together some funny pictures with them and my 17" TFT. :D

And of course get some decent 3DMark scores out. :)
