This is what is current in my basket, the small OC fairy on my shoulder is urging me to hit the buy button

Ok before I get mobbed I have read through all the other pages and am only
posting what is going on in my head, if someone can convince me otherwise. I feel I have made the right decision

I have looked at a lot of the pages and the 4870 seems to be mentioned a lot but from what I have seen
it does not out perform the 9800GX2 on its own, and only just beats it when crossfired

http://techreport.com/articles.x/14990/9

My thinking is to get the results I want I would have to buy 2x 4870 plus a crossfire board, bit more than I want to spend. If I get the 9800gx2 I get the results I want and when I do get and new motherboard I can get an SLI and always buy another.

I know it is big but it will fit in my case.

Power consumption
2x4870 234 idle
9800gx2 178 idle

Noise
2x4870 46.8 load
9800gx2 51.0 load

temp
2x4870 88 load
9800gx2 75 load

I'd still be tempted to get the single GTX280 for the little bit extra due to its larger memory and the fact you don't need to rely on SLI/profiles to get a game to work.

Okay 99% of games do use the GX2 properly but some still don't and some new games needed patches to work after they came out eg GRID.

Just my two pennies worth. ;)

9800GX2 owner here. Noisy, hot card, but gets the job done @ 1920x1200 nicely.

I reckon the 4870X2 should come in at around £350 due to ATi's consumer-friendly pricing, so you might want to wait for that as others have said. It should be a fair bit faster than the GX2.

i read that "no ATI card will ever cost more than $499" and when converted to the pound that is basically 250 pounds. and i expect them to live up to it

so far they have, and if its 250, id either buy it:D or get the 4870 because it should have a price cut :D

I would have to agree that everyone should hold off from buying the Gx2, Since i do not have the cash till friday and i want there to still be stock then ;)

It may be tempting to wait for the 4870x2 but i just can't wait that long since i am currently without a graphics card in my main system.

Is there an offical release date for the 4870x2

I am in no rush so might just wait. Even if it is expensive might force the 9800 gx2 down in price

Is the 9800GX2 or the 4870x2 a considerable upgrade from my BFG 768mb 8800GTX? Had considered binning it and buying two of the XFX that were on offer to SLi but held back for the time being. Want to SLi but also occasionally use two screens. Is it impossible to have both is dual monitor completely disabled when you SLi?

Most of the benchmarks I have seen show the 9800gx2 out performs the 280 in FPS only difference is the 280 has the new chip

Still curious to know if it is a significant upgrade from my 8800GTX. Anyone made this jump? Anyone able to answer my questions re. SLi?

Check out the link I posted

http://techreport.com/articles.x/14990/9

seems to be a jump in FPS from the GTX. some things I have heard though is if the game you play does not support SLI it will only use one of the cards which is something like a 8800 GT so you would notice a diff

For me I currently run a x1950 pro so anything would be an upgrade and I mainly play COD4

Can't speak for the GX2 but I went from a 8800 Ultra to a GTX280 and haven't looked back tbh. Great performance across the board. The Ultra was a great card as well, probably still the best I've ever owned.
