Hey all,

Bit of background to why I'm asking again - I've recently split with my partner and after she demanded a 50/50 split of all property including my stuff which she won I am left with no Dslr and plenty of other things missing too!

I had purchased a 550d with 18-55, 50mm and 50-250mm lense from these fine forums. I'm looking for some advice on a good starter camera, and am not sure whether I should be looking for a 550d or perhaps moving up to the 600d instead?

I loved the 50mm prime for its portrait shots and as such will definately be looking to get something similar again! I am a beginner and possibly as novice as can be, but love taking photo's so I'd really appreciate some help!

Thanks a lot :)

I just picked up a 600D with kit lens for £350 refurbished on Ebay with 12 month warranty. Went in to Jessops and handled the 550D and 600D and the 600D felt just a tiny bit more comfortable in my hands. May be worth heading in store and trying them both out, also as you are not committed to a particular brand may be worth also handling a Nikon as you might find you find it more natural/comfortable?

Was the refurb in good condition mate? I know where you're talking about but I wondered what kind of condition they may turn up in!

Mine is as new, only thing which wasn't was the box was just slightly tatty and that's only if I'm being really critical. Was sealed with Canon refurbishment sticker. Extremely pleased with my new toy and would recommend them.

Lens seems as new, cant see any signs of dust from looking at it, sensor seems clean as well.

550D vs 600D is pretty minimal really:

Slight changes to grip for right hand make it a tad more comfortable to hold IMO, grip for left hand makes no odds. Screen rotates which I have found very useful for awkward angles for product shots or general playing around.

I think it has very slightly faster continuous capture rates and slightly better focussing but don't hold be on that. Also has an input for an external stereo mic for when you are doing video capture, not sure if the 550D had this.

Although the changes are minimal I was happy to pay the small premium for the comfort when holding the camera.
