Now, as some of you might have noticed from another thread, I work in a Post Office. The Post Office deals with all those unemployed single mum types who don't want to work and get fed money from the government. The thing is, they've found a loophole or something, and it certainly explains the massive amounts of single mums in my little corner of the world.

Firstly, they're unemployed, so they don't have to pay their council rent or council tax, they don't have doctors fees to worry about, or dentist fees. They get reductions on all sorts of things, like my local leisure centre runs something called a Max Card which allows half price entry.

Secondly, they seem to be first on the list for council housing, which, when you've been looking for a place for the past three years and little Zoe with her new baby gets a house in 5 minutes, is kinda disheartening.

Thirdly, and this is the bit that annoys me the most, they get a TON of money every week. I mean, seriously, there has to be something up here. One of our regular customers, for example, comes in every two weeks and takes out over £350 each time! I've seen single mums coming in taking out up to £1000 which I'm assuming is some sort of grant from the government. Others are taking £150 a week!

Now don't forget, on top of that they don't have to pay rent or council tax, they don't work a minute in a week, they sit around in the pub all day, and go on holidays with their kids. While I'm working like a slave 5 and a half days a week, and after bills and everything, am getting less than these single mothers.

Oh to be a single mum... I just need to grow some breasts, wear chav jewellery and steal a child from somewhere and I might be able to pull it off...

and if they work 16 hours they get some serious wedge through working families tax credits(did one of the papers not list it as 400 plus quid a week?

Being a single mum is far from easy believe me.

I earn in a day what some earn in a month and I would not swap. I just could not handle it.

But then this only applies to those single mums who actually care about their kids and want the best for them.

The council estate breeding factories on the other hand...

If you have not tried to bring up a child on your own don't criticise those who do.

And on a final note I have far more disdain for the single fathers who have nothing to do with their kids yet claim the dole and contribute nothing.

Everytime I go into my local Post Office, which is around 3-4 times a week, there is always either some skanky **** pushing a pram containing children of dubious racial origin or Stompy Muketsu in front of me with their benefit cards waiting to suckle from the teat. I wouldn't mind so much but I run my own business and I am in the PO with my letters or posting off my tax cheque to Robber Brown. They are in my way, wasting my time. I am giving and they are taking yet I have to queue behind them.

Next time you hear of someone losing it 'Falling Down' style, by dressing in a long black trenchcoat shooting scum at random in a wanton orgy of retribution. It may be me. :p

/does deep breathing excercises and looks for medication

Yes this was New Labours answer to reducing child poverty. It is also often considered a taboo subject because we are ment to "think of the children".

I personally think it is an utter disgrace to pay somebody a vast amount of money to sit on their backside and lavish on state benefits once their children are at school fulltime. They expect married/couples to both work to exist which poses the exact same child care issues.

The other distressing fact is that many of them have chosen to be single parents purely for financial gain. Absent mum/dad continues to live at home with their parents and let the state bring up their kids. They can still stay with their partner for up to 4 nights a week before they are considered a live in partner. Mum signs the birth certificate as father unknown and then reliquishes dad from being made to contribute towards the childs upbringing. She can then take cash back handers from him to top up her benefits and use the threat of the CSA as a bargaining tool.

When it comes to little Johnny's/Britney's birthday mum has a temporary reprieve from her amnesia to who the father is and invites him to the kids birthday party.

Sad state of this country TBH.

Depends how many kids they have i think as to how much money they get but a typical single mum ( or dad ) like my sister for example, will get something like this if they have 1 child :

52.00 - Income support
78.00 - Child tax credits
16.00 - child benefit

Total £146 plus the other stuff mentioned above, rent paid council tax paid etc.

When you work in retail you will come accross absolutely loads of people who do a fixed low number of hours a week and refuse to do any extra hours they are offered becuase they get handouts from the government if they only do a few hours.

It's frankly disgusting. I despise the welfare state when used in this way.

Child TAX credits !

To me that insinuates that they pay tax and then get a rebate. Correct me if i have got this wrong but they don't pay TAX !!

While I do agree with you, I work a 4 on 4 off shift pattern and have 3 kids, while I'm off work my wife works so we take it in turns to look after them, do school runs etc, I realise this isn't the same as being a single parent but I have a damn good idea what it involves. I would take looking after the kids over going to work any day and strange as it may seem, I enjoy the time with my kids :)

Not all single parents are chavs who sit in the pub all day long, I know a good many who are excellent parents and deserve the financial support which our taxes pay for, the problem is in differentiating between the different types of single parent.

Maybe the application forms should ask if you tuck your shell suit pants into your sports socks?

Talking utter ****

Your article is so full of inaccuracies that it actually hurts my head on where to begin to put you right.

Personally I think that you have tried to chat up one of these single mum's thinking you have a good chance being in such a position of power that you are and she blew you out and you just cannot face the humiliation any longer and so have come on here to vent your spleen with your prejudices.

So ridiculing and putting prejudice's and insulting single mums is fair game, but just don't say anything bad about Muslims or immigrants as that is just intolerant and racist.

The welfare state is meant to be a safety net not a lifestyle choice.

Unfortunately too many people now see it that way, especially in Glasgow and no wonder we've got so many "on the poverty line". The amount of money that single mothers get is ridiculous and I know from my sisters experience just how much of a joke the system is, especially when the benefit officers themselves advised her how to abuse the system.

And they wonder why Glasgow is such a Labour stronghold. ;)

i honestly hate people on the dole or any other benefits. there just lazy end of. its not hard to find a job. i dont beleive the "I've been looking for a job for months" yeh shut and go watch Jeremy Kyle. then its mostly these people that come out with the "Oh, the imigrants are coming in and taking the jobs" no they are coming in asking places for jobs a little thing that you lazy waste of spaces should do. *Rant Over*
i do understand it might be hard for single mums but the 16-19 with 3 kids chavs walking round should have closed there legs a bit more or used contraceptives.

You 'hate' people on any benefits? What if they work and are also eligible to claim benefits?

For 90% of people, they CHOSE not to get a job. They might protest at this, but they do. There are jobs there for everyone and there is simply no excuse not to have one.

McDonalds for example are always hiring staff. It isnt a great job, but its a proper job, you earn money, and you don't sponge off the state.
