Having changed the oil in my BM this afternoon in record quick time, I turned my attention to the spark plugs, which were long overdue changing. I took the first one out without issue, a little oily on the tip though I thought:

On to the others, when I found this in number 2

And the resulting spark plug:

I'm surprised the engine ran at all! :( The pencil coil was just as bad with a load of carbonized gunk in the tip. It took some careful rubbing with a pencil rubber to clean it up, but it came up ok. All this time, the engine has been fine which I think is odd.

Anyway, when I started the engine after replacement and it was like something out of Uncle Buck for about 5 minutes, but I've given it a long run and it all seems fine to me.

Anyone have any idea why there would be so much oil in there?

Probably spilt from oil top ups and oil changes. The Alfa TwinSpark was renowned for this very thing due to the oil cap location.

But also quite likely rocker gasket as Howard says.

Cam cover / rocker cover gasket without a doubt. Can cause misfire but the electrode should get covered in oil until you lift the coil pack

I will pull the spark plug next weekend to see if there is any oil in there, but the pencil coil seals on the top, so the oil could only have gotten in there if someone changed the oil while doing the plugs at the same time, which hasn't been while I've owned the car.
