so i was doing a bit of a dust off of the pc figured i'd pull the cooler off and give it a clean up.

unfortunately guess what decided it wanted to come along for the ride? the cpu......


so i have an alpenfohn k2 with a cpu stuck to it by thermal paste that feels more like rubber than paste.

any idea's how the hell i'm gonna clean up this mess? i'm hesitant to go ham with a sharp edge to cut the cpu off the cooler but likewise i dont think just dropping the lot back in the rig is a good idea either.

yeah, just managed to get it off and gave the cooler a clean.

gonna be fun getting the residue off the cpu though, had sort of planned on it being easier to clean.....

Or just gently work it lose, repetitive fatigue will break the seal in the paste eventually.

yeah, just managed to get it off and gave the cooler a clean.

gonna be fun getting the residue off the cpu though, had sort of planned on it being easier to clean.....

now it's off the cooler put it back in the socket and clamp it down, then use cotton buds and isopropyl (if you have it or can get your hands on it)

ok so managed to get the cpu clean, popped back in the socket, think i might need some fresher thermal compound though.

it's an amd chip, the pins are sort of just squished by the socket, although apparently not very well.

i didn't exactly put much force on it.

nope, basically the man cave was being repainted over christmas and figured i'd get rid of the dust before plugging everything back in.

AM3/4 socket? This happened to me on my ryzen with the original cooler. Thermal paste was only a few days old?
