Needed to top up the oil in the VW Amarok today.

On the bottle (Edge Fully Synth) it said not suitable for use in vehicles with DPF. Why is this?

Dpf oil has something in it that can cope with diesel getting into the Oil, when a regen is done some unburnt fuel gets past the rings and into the oil, only a small amount but after many regens it can contaminate the oil, and if its not dpf oil this can be a problem, I was told this by a Jaguar technician.

Can't say I'm massively impressed, we have three at work.

Two have thrown up faults rendering them un-drivable within 10k of new, this ones used quite a bit of oil for a new engine IMO, over a litre.

Lack of power compared to other 4wds due to small engine with two turbos to compensate. Is improving with distance driven, but pretty pants needing to rev the nads off it to get anywhere.

Now we have to use special VW oil and will have to keep a bottle in the cab to check it every day since they will do a couple of thousand Kay's a week.... Better hope it doesn't break down too far from a major town, since nobody will be able to work on it apart from VW, computer says no!

When I was working with the Jaguars they were telling me the older 2.7's don't use dpf oil but have dpf's and don't get any more problems than the newer 3.0 litres that do use this oil, but the oil costs a fair amount more....

Just to confirm what everyone else is saying, it is to do with the amount of ash the oil produces when burnt, VW DPF engines require either 504 or 507 standard in the respective grade for the engine.

All VAG TDIs seem to burn massive quantities of oil as well compared to other manufacturers. My prior cars to my current VW were Italian and French, they literally never touched a drop of oil between services. I top up my VW every month or so doing a standard 12k a year, 2ltrs of top up lasts me about a year!

It's clearly by design but I'm not convinced it's a good one, especially when they equip their cars with possibly the hardest to read dipstick I have EVER seen...

So for every $200 in diesel, need to spend $20 on oil and add half a bottle every fill up if 1 litre per 1500km is expected!

Seems like a great design to me.....
