Hi

The Haynes manual says that engine oil must be applied to the replacement pattern part foam oil filter.

Is this correct and if so how do you apply it?

K&N sell spray can of oil which you Are supposed to spray lightly on the outside if there filters.

I've run a bike for for 5 years oiling the filter. Run another R1 without oing the filter. Have I noticed a difference no. Make of that what you will.

its just to keep the water out ect,"foam filter oil" from bike shops, wring it out as dry as you can after applying it or soaking the filter

The oil is what actually traps the dirt. If they are designed to be oiled, foam filters don't filter very well without it.

You can get it in aerosol form like this or this.

It it is designed for engine oil then simply wet the filter with oil and then squeeze the excess out of it. It just needs a thin coating throughout the foam, too much will clog the filter.
