Ok so in the 3-4 months ive had this pc, i have had a recurring problem - the pc won't boot 90% of the time, i really don't know why, first i thought it was psu, but same results with my perfect condition OCZ psu - then i thought RAM, but i tried it with brand new xms3's and still it refuses to boot, with a different gfx card, nothing, different hard drive, nope.

So its down to motherboard and cpu - (by wont boot, i mean all fans and lights etc come on, LCD poster says welcome then just starts ticking away with the time instead of booting, the power lights by each major component on motherboard aren't lit up, which is why i guess its not booting)

the way to fix this seems to be, turn off psu, remove and reseat all 4 ram sticks and my cpu and heatsink, once they are all back in it boots fine, but you have to admit this is a long winded way of starting my pc, not to mention a high risk of bending a cpu pin, so what should i do? is it cpu or motherboard?
How can i test? i would personally say motherboard as it doesnt seem to always transmit power to components to make it boot.

ideas? :(

What Mobo is it?

Perhaps a monitor problem... maybe it's switching sources automatically or something along those lines.

Do you have the CMOS speaker connected... any beeps when it doesn't boot? Any beeps when it does boot?

Its the asus crosshair 790fx rog board, its not monitor, it literally boots nothing :P

and yes i normally get a single beep after post, which im not getting, and also the card revs its fan for about 2 seconds when its posting successfully

Does it work correctly at stock speeds?

Do have the LCD post display for this board?

Hi,

Have you tried formatting the hard drive? Do you have any USB sticks in the computer while booting? Tried a different power outlet?

If all fails, try and boot with the least possible components, if the above is scratched out of the list I would say Motherboard...

nkata - yea it works fine with stock and overclock the same, it just refuses to boot 90% of the time :( overclock doesnt affect it

Yes, mentioned in original post about poster.

pv123 - Makes no difference, i tried booting from multiple harddrives and none at all - wont even post without a harddrive - i have tried booting with min components to no avail.

Sounds like a very odd problem to me. Especially if it boots after reseating all the components.

Number one thing to try is clear the CMOS as Baldbloke suggests. If that doesn't work, it may be corrupted in the firmware. Reseat components, boot, then flash update the BIOS to the latest version...see if that helps.

yeah i tried resetting cmos and bios loads, i updated it and downgraded several times, makes no difference, so im still saying board personally, any more comments? should i rma board?

After looking at all the attempts you have made on it. I'd personally say it's the PSU. I have seen a lot of systems that refuse to post. You have to unplug from wall, wait 10 seconds... back in and away you go.

Worth trying another spare PSU for a day or two, see how you get on.

To add to the above, does the PSU make any weird noises? Loud high-pitched squealing for instance?

OT edit: I greatly approve of Buchanan0204's signature, and hope he will consider having a series that examines the correct usage of "your" versus "you're", and "their/there/they're".

Yea PSU's make all kind of weird noises when they're faulty; Also I would try it with just one RAM module installed, keep things simple.

This smells more and more like a faulty motherboard to me. He's already said he's tried different PSUs. The only two constants I can see are his motherboard and CPU and usually if a CPU is friend it's not going to start, ever.

My vote is to RMA the board.

Ok psu, when i ordered this it came with an OCuK crusade 850Watt, and i first thought that it was that because its a cheap psu, but with my trusty 650watt OCZ stealthstream its the same.

@ Operation, I removed battery and have used the clr_cmos jumper button which is integrated into the mobo, no affect sadly, and the same problems occurs with bare minimum plugged in, there must be some power transmission failure through the motherboard somewhere or somehow and i agree mnemonik, if it was my cpu it wouldnt boot at all, it seems that because i remove and reseat the cpu to allow it to boot, that somehow breaks any current left in motherboard? like static build up or something, i duno an rma seems worth it, but i dont want to be without my pc for a while, how long do rma's normally take?

and also could i just take my whole system into OC hq and get them to look at it there? and just wait to see what they say?
