OK, im bored with seti, what to do?

Hi Guys,

I've had enough of seti@home :( , the comradeship in that project has all but gone and I feel that after over 3 years of crunching, the return on my money ( yes I have got extra/new hardware for seti ), time, call it what you want is zero. Not to mention the low probability of success.
I've set no new work for all computers so in 2-5 days I will have the following free.

1x 1.73 p4 m dothan, 1gig ram, xp
1x amd 4400 overclocked to 2.5, 2 gig ram, xp pro
3x p4 3 gig 600 series , 512mb ram, xp
1x 3.4 p4 600 series. 512mb ram, xp
1x 2.8 p4c @ 3.2 with 512 mb ram, win 2000
1x 3.2 p4c with 1 gig ram, xp
1x p4 3.06 no ht, 512 mb ram, xp
1x amd 3200, 1 gig ram, xp
1x p4 willy 1.9, 512 mb ram, win 2000,only connected to internet twice a week.

so thats 11 pc's with nothing to do.


I don't mind sticking with boinc or dare I say the dark side :D , although the project needs to be low maintanence and pretty well hidden from user's eg. only way to know its running is to look in task manager and easy + quick to set up. Also not a major resource hog as most of these pc's are used in a work enviroment.

I will crunch for whichever OcUK team is on that project ( goes without saying )

Your suggestions please gentlemen.

Folding. Runs as a service which is invisible to users apart from in the Task Manager and can set a memory limit. The majority of WUs require no more than 40MB but you can specify even less.
 
There's no need to go over to the dark side... there's plenty of BOINC based projects where Team OcUK could do with a hand... QMC, SIMAP, SZTAKI, PrimeGrid etc. I have found most of them to be less demanding than SETI in terms of memory usage too.
 
Definitely folding. We'd love to have you on the team. Check out the stickied setup guide, its all in there, and ask here if you have problems. I think billy's ninja replying skills are pretty good atm :p
 
As the good man VeNT himself said - 'Folding makes girls want you more'. You should need no more encouragement.

Seriously though, F@H does suit your requirements there - especially with the limits on RAM and CPU usage. You can hack BOINC to do the CPU limiting, but it's far better to fold anyway.

C'mon just cos my RAC started picking up again doesn't mean you will never catch me :p

Plus your only a couple of weeks away from your 2m tiffe, gotta stick around for that :D

Plus.. well its just not right and you'll look terrible in white plastic :eek:
