And no, not the wife...

I've been asked to look into a possible new cooker as we're getting fed up of the old on (a built in single oven cheapy), and it looks like free standing double oven is on the cards as I need to replace the worktop anyway.

Induction seems to be in favour but I've no clue (except that it would likely need us to get new pots and pans*).

We've seen a few including one at John Lewis but as I've no idea what good brands/models are I'm hoping that there will be some knowlegable people in here :)

As for what it'll be used for, nothing special just general cooking.

Cheers.

*Not a bad thing given that people kept using metal things in the non stick pans

Depending on budget I would recommend Rangemaster. I say that purely because we’ve had ours for 10+ years and apart from a grill element going and recently the fan oven fan needing to be replaced, it’s been absolutely bulletproof. Ours is regular electric but heard good things about the induction ones.

I’m sure others would disagree but we couldn’t be happier with ours and definitely would replace with another if we were forced to.

Every cookery program on TV seems to use gas, so if you have mainline gas then that's probably the way to go for decent cooking.

My parents have induction and there really isn't much added benefit, especially since you need to change every pan you use. I certainly wouldn't rate it over gas for instant on heat. Plus they make a buzzing noise when you crank them up.

Depending on budget I'd say opt for something John Lewis sells so you get something with an extended warranty and go for a cheaper cooker. They're simple appliances at the end of the day that just heat up. I had a Zanussi for years that gave me no trouble for what it's worth. I've also had Bosch and Beko appliances and they worked the same as each other, even though the Bosch cost twice the amount.
