Right, basically I'm looking to get a new car in March, but I only have about 2k to spend. I could maybe push to 3k if it was going to be a cheap car to insure.

I've been looking about on here, and various other sites, as well as autotrader etc, and I've seen a few things I like... but thats the problem, I don't want to end up buying something just because I like it, so I need some advice... basically, I want you to spec me a car :)

It doesn't need to be the most powerful of cars, but I'd still like a fair bit of power... I don't race people, but if theres someone slow in front of me I'd like to be able to get round them fairly easily.

My main 3 criteria are:

Reliability - eg something that less likely to break down, cheap to maintain etc

Style - The only car I've ever owned is a daewoo nexia, and it really is ugly :( I would really like to have a good-looking car that I can take pride in.

POWER - Put it in capitals 'cos even tho I think its the least important of the 3, I still think its a bit important :)

What I plan to take away from this thread is a more detailed picture of the sort of cars I'm going to try and track down, maybe even have a shortlist of 3 or 4 cars in which to look out for. I appreciate any help greatly :)

Primera GT
Almera GTi
Mitsubushi FTO
Honda Prelude
Mondeo of some description
Mazda Mx6

Sorry if they are not that exciting as 2k isn't much to play with really.

Hmmm...

Top Stuff...

As above id go with some of those, what about these examples:

media

Galant Sport

media

Civic Coupe

media

Honda Accord (bit bland, but fits the bill in other ways)

How old are and how much NCB do you have this wll determine if its worth you getthing an older quick car or a maodern slightly slower motor, for ex if you are young with low NCB a 306 dturbo would fit the bill.

Are you looking for economy aswell?Running costs a concern?

looking good so far :p

2 seats is perhaps a bit small, tbh I can't remember having more than one passenger but I'd like to have that option :p

I'm 22 with 3 years no claims

EDIT: Sorry, getting ahead of myself... insurance isnt up till june

Personally of all the ones posted so far, i would get a Primera or Mondeo ST-24, both group 17/16 insurance, but a cheap to buy so you stand a decent chance of getting a decent example. Also the preludes are well cheap now, good relible motor.Fto for 2k will be a dog or a crappy 1.8.

A question to axeboy, what are the chances of getting a decent galant for 2k?

Very...

Youd be surprised.

I recently helped a mate buy a 1998 Galant V6 Estate. Its a great car, so so smooth with full cream leather, heated electric seats, climate etc etc. Its a mint machine, and all for £1500.

You'd need to look for exactly what you want, but its very much a possibility.

We had a guy trying to sell his 2.5 v6 Sport Saloon (manual) on the forums for less than £3k, and this thing was mint... a nice looking car, think it was a 2001 as well. Might have sold now, but it was months and months he was waiting.
